Villagers unfazed by rising activity at Mount Tambora | |
Upsy Daisy User ID: 1495033 United Kingdom 09/03/2011 08:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Usually when villagers and local people don't heed warnings I would say it is because they have become accustomed to the activity in their surroundings. That isn't the case here though as activity is not the norm. There was a slight hiccup in 1967 and two earthquakes 2009/2010. [link to www.volcano.si.edu] During 2004 a buried town was discovered near the volcano. It has been called the Pompeii of the East because of the preservation of human artifacts. If there is i hope it errupts like sakurajima now like it did before mega erruption. It was same kind of erruption than sakurajima now but then there happened some kind of magma block and then Tambora collected lots of pressure and then bumb. |
Upsy Daisy User ID: 1495033 United Kingdom 09/03/2011 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sakurajima has been quite active for many hundreds of years, it's latest activity started in 1955 and has been ongoing even to this day. If I remember right it's super eruption was a VEI 6. Tambora however is a different matter, it's not as active as Sakurajima is today. It's super eruption was a VEI 7. There have been a couple of VEI 2's since so if it erupts it could just be a fart in a colinder. But It has 130 years of pressure backing it up atm. What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. |

As of Friday, activity in 22 volcanoes was categorized as above normal, with six at alert level three and 16 at level two. Volcano status ranges from level one, which is normal, to four, which is the highest alert. The Volcanology and Geophysical Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) raised the status of Papandayan, one of the major tourist destinations in Garut, West Java, to alert level three on Friday..." so-gui-li User ID: 1332289 Finland 09/03/2011 11:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Aira-caldera (sakurajima) pushed up over 400km3 and was vei 7. Tambora vei 7 too and pushed up 100-160km3. Aira is more bigger and it is capable vei8 erruption and allso i have read that it is possible that there have been bigger erruptions in tambora than that last big one. There have been lots of little erruptions and activity in mt tambora but main problem is there that when it errupts it generates lots of explosion gas and pressure really fast. It is not problem when gas goes of but if it cannot then it is big one. |

There have been lots of little erruptions and activity in mt tambora but main problem is there that when it errupts it generates lots of explosion gas and pressure really fast. It is not problem when gas goes of but if it cannot then it is big one. The Aira Caldera is 150 sq miles I can see a VEI 8 causing that. Sakurajima forms only a small part of this supervolcano ( there are a few more volcanoes within the caldera ) and is 17 x 23 km wide. I agree the Aira Caldera could form a huge VEI. But Sakurajima should not be confused as being the Supervolcano itself. This site lists the biggest Sakurajima has blown at a VEI 6. Start Date: 6200 BC ± 1000 years - VEI 6 [link to www.volcano.si.edu] It explodes every 4-24 hours so I am guessing there is nowhere near enough pressure in that volcano itself to be Tamborian size due to it being released regulary. Tambora hasn't had a significant explosion in 130 years so all that pressure has now built up so I agree, it could be a real big one like 1815. Anonymous Coward User ID: 842983 United States 09/03/2011 12:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's like how a frog can be cooked in a pot when the temperature is slowly raised but if you tried to put the frog in hot water he would jump out. The whole world is slowly getting used to increasing disaster so we won't jump out of the hot water we just sit there and get cooked. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1332289 Finland 09/03/2011 01:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes upsy it is true. That mega erruption had 22000 years ago and it started from sakurajima but then whole mountain collapsed. Same thing was really near in 1915. I think there is enough magma about mega erruption but luckyly not enough pressure. But this tambora thing is really scary. I hope that same thing will happen that it can push its pressure like sakurajima does from aira magma chamber. If there is high viscoty magma it will really bad. Hoply only some like vei 2-3. But there is lots of energy inside because great sumatran fault have been so active long time and tambora takes all its magma from that movment. Like toba. |
