Villagers unfazed by rising activity at Mount Tambora
BIMA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- The status of the Mount Tambora volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa has been raised to the second-highest alert status as its activity has been increasing since April, the Jakarta Globe reported on Friday.

Residents who have spent most of their lives living on the slopes of the volcano remain unfazed despite the warnings from authorities and the rumblings they are increasingly feeling from underneath the earth, according to Syaifullah, the head of the Pekat subdistrict which lies on Tambora's hillside.

"The hundreds of families in the villages and hamlets that lay between 5 to 10 kilometers (3 to 6 miles) from the peak have not shown any panic and continue to conduct their daily activity as usual," Syaifullah said.

Mount Tambora, which is responsible for the largest and deadliest volcanic eruption in recorded history, started showing signs of awakening in April. But in early August, it spewed thick white smoke 20 meters (66 feet) into the sky.
So far, Indonesian authorities have not ordered any evacuations and have only warned residents to be on alert. Two villages, Pancasila and Doro Pet, are particularly vulnerable as they are located within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the volcano's peak which has a height of 4,300 meters (14,100 feet), making it the tallest in the Indonesian archipelago.

Re: Villagers unfazed by rising activity at Mount Tambora
Usually when villagers and local people don't heed warnings I would say it is because they have become accustomed to the activity in their surroundings.
That isn't the case here though as activity is not the norm.

There was a slight hiccup in 1967 and two earthquakes 2009/2010.

During 2004 a buried town was discovered near the volcano. It has been called the Pompeii of the East because of the preservation of human artifacts.

Is 'The Destroyer' to blame for the super eruption Tambora had in 1815 ?

I hope there is not lots of magma. If there is i hope it errupts like sakurajima now like it did before mega erruption.

It was same kind of erruption than sakurajima now but then there happened some kind of magma block and then Tambora collected lots of pressure and then bumb.

Sakurajima has been quite active for many hundreds of years, it's latest activity started in 1955 and has been ongoing even to this day. If I remember right it's super eruption was a VEI 6.

Tambora however is a different matter, it's not as active as Sakurajima is today. It's super eruption was a VEI 7. There have been a couple of VEI 2's since so if it erupts it could just be a fart in a colinder. But It has 130 years of pressure backing it up atm.

Find out the latest on Tambora here:

There is a pretty cool video of Tambora as well.

Increased activity at 22 volcanoes, alert raised

Sat, 09/03/2011 8:00 AM

"The government has requested that local administrations remain on the alert for severe risks of volcanic eruptions, as the number of volcanoes showing abnormal activity continued to raise.

As of Friday, activity in 22 volcanoes was categorized as above normal, with six at alert level three and 16 at level two. Volcano status ranges from level one, which is normal, to four, which is the highest alert.

The Volcanology and Geophysical Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) raised the status of Papandayan, one of the major tourist destinations in Garut, West Java, to alert level three on Friday..."

Re: Villagers unfazed by rising activity at Mount Tambora
Aira-caldera (sakurajima) pushed up over 400km3 and was vei 7.

Tambora vei 7 too and pushed up 100-160km3.

Aira is more bigger and it is capable vei8 erruption and allso i have read that it is possible that there have been bigger erruptions in tambora than that last big one.

There have been lots of little erruptions and activity in mt tambora but main problem is there that when it errupts it generates lots of explosion gas and pressure really fast. It is not problem when gas goes of but if it cannot then it is big one.

Many scientists believe Tambora is responsible for the year without a summer in 1816.

It had a VEI of 7.

The Aira Caldera is 150 sq miles I can see a VEI 8 causing that. Sakurajima forms only a small part of this supervolcano ( there are a few more volcanoes within the caldera ) and is 17 x 23 km wide. I agree the Aira Caldera could form a huge VEI. But Sakurajima should not be confused as being the Supervolcano itself.
This site lists the biggest Sakurajima has blown at a VEI 6. Start Date: 6200 BC ± 1000 years - VEI 6 [link to www.volcano.si.edu]
It explodes every 4-24 hours so I am guessing there is nowhere near enough pressure in that volcano itself to be Tamborian size due to it being released regulary.

Tambora hasn't had a significant explosion in 130 years so all that pressure has now built up so I agree, it could be a real big one like 1815.

It's like how a frog can be cooked in a pot when the temperature is slowly raised but if you tried to put the frog in hot water he would jump out.

The whole world is slowly getting used to increasing disaster so we won't jump out of the hot water we just sit there and get cooked.

Re: Villagers unfazed by rising activity at Mount Tambora
Yes upsy it is true. That mega erruption had 22000 years ago and it started from sakurajima but then whole mountain collapsed. Same thing was really near in 1915. I think there is enough magma about mega erruption but luckyly not enough pressure.

But this tambora thing is really scary. I hope that same thing will happen that it can push its pressure like sakurajima does from aira magma chamber.

If there is high viscoty magma it will really bad. Hoply only some like vei 2-3. But there is lots of energy inside because great sumatran fault have been so active long time and tambora takes all its magma from that movment. Like toba.

I think it is first time what i remember when some official author says that there is potential hazard danger 100-150km3 erruption. Vei7

This is from indonesia volcano obsevatory.

G. Improvement Status Tambora from Normal to Alert

V.Potential Hazards

Paroksimal Tambora eruption in 1815 issued a burst of ash by the eruption of the volume of material thrown into the air reaches 100-150 km 3 with a high umbrella of eruption is estimated at 30-40 km above gunungapinya.

In Disaster Prone Areas (KRB) III potentially knocked hot clouds, lava flows and toxic gases, and at a radius of 3 km potentially affected burst of incandescent rocks and ash rains.

In Disaster Prone Areas (KRB) II potentially knocked hot clouds, lava flows and toxic gases, and the radius of 5 km or potentially affected hurl avalanches of incandescent rock, ash dense, wet mud (heat), lava flows, toxic gases, and water with high acidity.

In Disaster Prone Areas (KRB) I potentially affected lava, and at a radius of 8 km potentially affected and the possibility of ash fall can be exposed to hurl stones (incandescent).
