New phone/internet virus scam
Just thought I'd give the glp'ers a heads up. My wife got a call today from some Indian guy claiming that her computer was sending out viruses. He had an urgent, almost frantic tone to his voice. He kept trying to get her to open the start menu on her computer but she didn't fall for it. lol

She took his phone number and told him I would call him back. Which I did, and got a recording for this place [link to eprotectionz.com]

apparently they try to trick you into believing they can see your system and then sell you some crap. All of the info I found was from this summer so it must be a new scam. Heres a couple of examples.

Re: New phone/internet virus scam
I've been getting sms scammers.

First one said they were a Nokia promo, but the email address was a hotmail a/c, i mean, please! Hotmail?

They even sent an email claiming to be from the FBI & said that the promo wasn't a scam, & to go ahead & send them money.

I'm not the squeakiest clean guy out there, i asctually have quite a big criminal record, but these pieces of slime make me sick.

Re: New phone/internet virus scam
They have been calling New Zealand for over a year now. They say they are from Microsoft. After getting several calls over a few weeks, I decided to play around with them a bit. They told me my computer had been compromised with a virus etc, so first i got them hooked, made out i was shocked and what did i have to do.. after been told to go to the start menue, i said i had to turn my pc on and it was old so would take a while.. all the while i was on facebook lol.. anyway, i asked really dumb questions, made out i knew nothing about computers so asked where the start menue was lol.. then said oh sorry someone was at the door and i would be right back. I sat the phone down for FIFTEEN minutes lol came back asked a lot more dumb questions all the while they are STILL trying to get me to open start menu lol...(im trying not to laugh) I asked how i got the virus, how they would get rid of it bla bla anyway.. 40 minutes later YES FORTY hahaha .. they said i got the virus from an internet page,,, I SAID OH I DONT HAVE THE INTERNET ROFFL.. he asked why i told him at the begining that i did, and i said no i didnt, you asked if i had a computer, not if i had the internet hhahaha.,,, havent had a phone call since.

I get an email every now and then, from the CEO of Comcast, saying I won an ipad. His email was hotmail. How can these scammers be so fucking stupid? And the people who fall for these scams are all but brain dead.

i agree with TheBroker. the scammer sounds professional and a bit concerned so if you're unwary, you easily fall. there's no stopping them and it's not safe anymore.

i have encountered similar scams thru phone calls, emails and texts and they're not fooling me. they're not new but old tricks employed over and over again by these criminals. i read forums and join discussions a lot and i've read about these scams at [link to www.callercenter.com.] they're tactics are exposed and i'm doing my share of warning others.

The thing is, he called your wife - not she called him. That is usually the telltale of what's up. I don't even answer calls from out of the country nor any that are unidentified.

This scam must be getting some suckers. Some Indian guy called me with the same line. I had a great time leading him on, begging for any software he could sell me to end the crisis. There is some Indian guy in Calcutta, with a big phone bill but no sale.bsflagbsflagbsflagbsflagpropogandapropoganda

Re: New phone/internet virus scam
You should always report them.

First, you should call the company they say they are to see if it is genuine, if they tell you it isn't then report them to trading standards of fraudline , always get advice.

Why cant I get calls like this? I would have so much fun!
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

I'd like to go quietly in my sleep, like grandpa did. Not screaming in terror like the people in the back seat of the car he was driving.
