In "Three Septembers and a January," from Neil Gaiman's comic The Sandman, DEATH remarks:

"They say that the world rests on the backs of 36 living saints – 36 unselfish men and women. Because of them the world continues to exist. They are the secret kings and queens of this world."

These 36 are referred to as the Lamed-Vav Tzadikim.

According to the Talmud, the role of the 36 righteous people is to justify the purpose of humankind in the eyes of God.



The term Lamed-Vav Tzadikim is derived from the hebrew letters Lamed (L) and Vav (V), whose numerical value adds up to 36. The number 36 is twice 18, which in Hebrew gematria stands for "Life"...the hebrew letters that spell CHAI, which means
"Living" also add up to 18, Thus the 36 represents "two lives".

The Lamed-Vav Tzaddikim are also called the Nistarim ("concealed ones"). They emerge from their self-imposed concealment and by mystic powers which they possess, they succeed in averting the disasters of their people. On occasion, one is discovered, in which case the secret of their identity must not be disclosed. The Lamed-vavniks do not themselves know that they are one of the 36, and tradition claims that if a person wwere to claim that they
were one of the 36, then in fact it would be positive that they are not one. The 36 are exemplars of ANAVAH (Humility), thus one of the 36 would be too humble to believe she or he were one of them.


In Gershom Scholem's “The Tradition of the Thirty-Six Hidden Just Men, He speculates that the number 36 originates in the ancient astrology, where the 360 degrees of the heavenly circle are divided into thirty-six units of 10, and each 10 is called a "DEAN", or as more commonly known a DECAN.


“A dean-divinity ruled over each segment of the thus divided circle of the zodiac, holding sway over ten days of the year…. In Egyptian Hellenistic sources, the DEANS were regarded also as watchmen and custodians of the universe, and it is quite conceivable that [in Hellenistic astrology] the number thirty-six, which Abbaye read into Scripture, no longer represented these cosmological powers or forces but rather human figures.”
