Bulging disk, sciatic pain down the right leg, numb foot, can't work - scared
I moved on August 11th which must have caused the injury. That night I got a severe leg cramp in the right thigh. The cramp was so bad, I wanted to die for a minute. The next day I was in agonizing pain, from the back, down the leg.

I saw doctors that day, they diagnosed a bulging disk between L4 and L5 and gave me muscle relaxants, anti-inflamitories, and codeine. The codeine did nothing to alleviate the pain so I had to go back to the hospital the next morning after a night of agony. I insisted on oxycodone. I'm not an opiate fan, but it was needed.

Two weeks passed by in total agony. The doctors warned of depression which I have handled quite well so far. I was lucky I could walk, but I could not sit or lay down. Can't sleep walk :( I used the bare minimum of oxycodone and switched between that and the codeine. I made at least five trips to the hospital during the first two weeks. Had an x-ray which showed nothing. I need an MRI and a steroid shot in the spine.

The pain lessened after the first two weeks and stuck with the codeine and switched between that and tylenol when I could. I've been home bound and unable to work. My rent is due tomorrow and I have an overdraw of $650 in one account and $1 in my PayPal.

The pain started in my right buttocks, but spread to my thigh and then to my calve, and eventually to my foot. Now I have a numb spot in the first four toes and the ball of my foot. I feel like a cripple, which I am. I ran out of codeine several days ago and have been relying on the tylenol. My next doctor's appointment is Tuesday.

I do the psychical therapy which I believe has helped. The pain is less, but still maddening. I feel like I'm loosing it mentally.

Today I feel nauseated and sick; probably due to detox from the opiates, but I can't help but worry. Is it cancer? Is it worse? Now I feel it spreading to the left leg a little and my legs feel cold. I can't work or pay rent. I have no family, lost them all to cancer. I have food for which I thank God with each bite.

I don't know what to do and now the depression is getting me.

I'm drinking vodka/cranberry tonight, haven't had a drink in months and am not an alcoholic. I'm just stir crazy and depressed and worried about money.

I need help and hope.

Psalm 103

King James Version (KJV)

Psalm 103

Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

7He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

8The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

9He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

10He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

12As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

13Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

14For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

15As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

18To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

19The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

20Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

21Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

22Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

One thing I can recommend is to consider cutting out caffeine. It may help. I've had costochondritis for over a year and no one could help me. They just hand me oxycodone and take my money and make another referral.

I read online that people can develop a sensitivity to caffeine causing inflammation in the body. I stopped 6 days ago and today has been the first day I haven't been in horrible pain... and not a single pill today either.

I also was getting severely depressed. Please understand pain is a horrible thing to live with. Please realize it is likely the cause of the depression. Everything seems like shit when dealing with pain.

Thank you!

I do have a friend with four (4) ruptured disks and surgery destroyed him.

I'm grateful and thankful - I know it's not that bad.

To those who would hate on me, I feel sorry for you and will pray for you.

It's scary to not be able to sit or lay for weeks on end. I never knew how bad pain could get. I watched my mom pass from pancreatic cancer, it is one of the most painful deaths. This is nowhere near that bad and I'm not dying.

But the depression is getting to me.

I'd love to go back to work.

I'd love to sit in a chair.

Hey, I've been there too! It affected my left leg much more than my right. Had a lumbar microdiskectomy at L5-S1 last year; bulges at L3-4 and L4-5. My neurosurgeon says a spinal fusion is in my future. The surgery was pretty bad but it mostly cured the leg pain which is the worst. I wasn't sleeping more than 2 hours at a time and could only sleep in one position pre-surgery.

I hope it gets better for you soon, just hang in there!

Been there, done that with 3 back surgeries for the same problem you're having. Also, 2 diagnosis's for spinal fusion. There's hope right around the corner. I get these occasional spats, but they only last 3 months and will go away quicker if you exercise. It's your muscles keeping your back aligned so you've got to build them back up. Booze and opiates are very depressing, but easy to withdraw from if you start cutting back now and start building your back muscles up. Good luck, and remember, it won't last forever.

WRONG. This should be your absolute LAST resort.

Get thee to a good chiropractor, quick. This is exactly what they excel at. Don't expect a miracle, but under good chiropractic care you experience noticeable improvement in a week or two and can expect a full recovery.

Do the exercises they give you and avoid lifting anything heavy or bending at the waist.

You'll be better soon. I promise. Just go to a chiropractor who is recommended by dancers and/or athletes. Those folks will know who the good ones are.

Stay away from fusion!!! There's no guarantee that will relieve any pain. Besides, one fusion leads to another until your spinal column is like a broomstick.

Hey, I was there for 11 miserable years and three back surgeries, and I got through it, without any long term addictions. You can too. Try to adopt a real tough mindset, because you will need it.
Things that helped me: BIBLE (though it took me awhile to get there) , physical therapy as far as exercises and a big one for me is using a ball on the areas that hurt. I use a large softball, but it is a hard one, a little sadistic, but it works for me. Put it right where it hurts and put pressure on the pain. It feels better afterwards. Lay on the floor on your back with your feet on the couch. Sleep with a pillow under your knees. Use a moist heat heating pad on the back, it will give relief while it is there. Lay on the floor on your back and rotate your hips away from the pain.
Just some suggestions, I know it hurts a lot. Hot tubs are useful if you can find one, especially if it is really hurting. The one thing I did get relief from was the nerve root injections. A little from the first one, a lot from the second, and just a little from the third. Why one worked so well and the others did not, I don't know.
Hang in there and I will pray for your healing.

FYI codeine is also an opiate. I had a friend who had a sciatic nerve pinch problem from a slipped disk. The doctor started them on oxycodone and it just made them more miserable. Eventually my friend turned to smoking high grade weed to alleviate the pain, which helped. The only solution was surgery, and that fixed the problem. But recently their pain has been coming back, so...

Re: Bulging disk, sciatic pain down the right leg, numb foot, can't work - scared
Hi this is Bob in Arizona. I know exactly what you are going through. I had a waterskiing accident and I fractured S-1 in three places and compressed L-5 to S-1. I could barely walk and the pain was unbarable. I used to cry my self to sleep everynight from exhaustion. But there is a cure. It is called lumbar radiofrequency neurotomy (or radiofrequency rhizotomy) is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces or eliminates the pain from damaged facet or sacroiliac joints by disrupting the medical branch nerves that carry pain signals. Just search for a pain clinic that does that procedure. The first time it lasted for 6 months becuase your nerves grow back. But the second time I had it done I was pain free for a little over a year. Then you have to repeat the procidure about once a year. Before this I was taking Fentanal patches just to function. But that just took the edge off. But this procidure is fast it is done in like 40 min. I hope this helps you I know it gave my life back to me.
Take care,
Bob

Sorry I disagree with you. It fixed my sciatica. I could not walk nor sit on a toilet. I could not move. The ER doc told me I had enough morphine to choke a horse, and it wasn't touching my pain.

I also had a spinal fusion last year and it was a complete success. I aggravated the original injury from a heavy lift.

Not all surgeries are failures.

I used to work with a guy who had this problem caused by bull riding. He literally worked out on a regular basis to keep his back muscles strong which kept the condition from becoming worse. He would actually go to the gym when he started to experience pain from it. Sounds counter intuitive but it kept his condition from becoming worse and helped him to avoid surgery.
