Re: BORG from Star Trek.
This concept of the Borg on Star Trek, was one of your Adversary's best played tricks, from my perspective.........he took a very wonderful concept, and turned it into a FORCED robotic zombie like state!

 Quoting: ObeWayneKenobe

Species 180 Ferengi

We don't know why Fer-enki are categorized so early in Borg history (as opposed to humans, Vulcans and other Alpha Quadrant species with ordinal numbers in the thousands, e.g. Species 5618 Humans).

Species 180 -- the Borg get infiltrated.

Re: BORG from Star Trek.
A part of what made the Borg such a popular Trek villain is the thought in the back of every fan's mind - those who are pretty wise and experienced either with Trek or scifi in general - "there but the grace of God goes humanity." With enough technology, we could well become the Borg if we're not careful.

Once things like cybernetic additions and modifications become a true possibility and plugging computers into human brains become possible, what's to stop some evil genius hacker, or evil genius corporation or evil government from turning the population into such a thing? Maybe that's how the Borg Queen started out? Maybe she was the genius hacker or evil head of state who first turned her population into those things, though originally at a much lower tech level, probably? Now she clones herself and downloads her memories and experiences into new bodies as needed. She seems to exist in multiple places, on multiple Borg ships at once. Many clones of her, all linked in a parallel collective as one mind that acts as a controller to the larger, outer collective.

It would be a terrible thing, but it also presents a terrifying possibility of where we could be headed.

Her lips were red, her looks were free,
Her locks were yellow as gold:
Her skin was as white as leprosy,
The Night-Mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she,
Who thicks man's blood with cold.

Re: BORG from Star Trek.
it seems that the various groups are code for ethnic groups here.

The Klingons were modelled on the ones who "submit".
The Ferengi are modelled on another
The Bajorans are modelled after Hindus
The Cardassians seem to be based on those who live to the west of the main Hindu hangout.

So basically its all code based upon ethnic and religious groups here.

I think the borg are the UN and the NWO, you know everybody under the one control, individuality erased, robotic, dull, automotons.

You see them everywhere in the modern world, all conforming, all fitting in, all drones.

The Klingons were originally modeled on the Mongols of Genghis Khan's era. In the movies and then later in Next Gen they got a lot of Spartan and Norse thrown into the mix, too.

The BORG is the worst horror possible. Imagine being conquered and assimilated to become part of a collective entity whose sole purpose is to conquer and assimiliate others and you have no ability to stop the madness or change your fate. It's like becoming a part of a force of evil destruction.

Sounds a lot like being a part of the USA at this point, your know that it's a force of evil and imperialism but so many others that are assimilated are trying to protect it..... 5a

My personal view is they are vile. No one ought to be forced into a Collective Mind. Individuality, despite our flaws, makes us great.

People make and define communities first of all.

Communities do not make and define people.

People build them up, not the other way around.
 Quoting: PhoenixMatthias

excellent!

I also believe that our society is pushing us to embrace a borg-like state. When I first watched the Borg as a kid on Star Trek, I found them to be horrific.

The 'hive mind' is a brainwashed one.

Re: BORG from Star Trek.
What do people here on GLP think of the BORG? Intellectually, philosophically, culturally.

The BORG are a cybernetic beings linked a to Hive Mind. People in the galaxy are forcibly linked to this Hive Mind.

Tiny nanobots are released into the blood stream. This preps the victim for assimilation. Cybernetic parts are added to the victim; included is a device which links their mind to the Collective.

What do people think of this? What is your view of the BORG?

Elon Musk wants to make us all into the Borg, with his cybernetic brain implants.

I would prefer to be an individual than a mindless automaton.
But that's just me. Even my screen name would be disallowed as a Borg. It would have to be, We, not me.
