Videotaped on October 28, 2008 in Newark, NJ, CBS 2 News cameraman Jim Quodomine attempts to film a peaceful march taking place on the public property of the sidewalk outside of a church. It is being held by members of the community wishing to draw attention to young victims of violence in the community. Before he can get any footage, he is confronted by New Jersey special police officer Brian Shariff, who points in his direction and demands that he "put that camera away." While Jim attempts to ignore the illegal order and continues to record, the officer takes a step towards him, once again pointing at him and demanding that he "put the camera away." Now visibly agitated, Shariff takes another step towards Jim, yelling, "put the camera away!" Though he is only excercising his First Amendment right to Freedom of Press, officer Shariff advances on Jim immediately and violently attempts to snatch his camera. As Jim resists the illegal seizure of his property, a struggle ensues between himself and the officer, and the camera loses focus. |
