Texas Fires -- East Texas Bear Creek Fire at 30,000 Acres, Growing
Hey guys, my parents live pretty far out in the piney woods of east Texas and they have a wildfire very close to them out of Cass county. I can't find much info on the fires, most of the news is covering the Austin area.

I've found a couple of reports:

Some reports are too old, reporting the fire will be 85% contained by tonight, when my folks can see out their front porch that clearly it isn't. They haven't fallen under mandatory evacuations yet, but any GLP folks in or around Linden, Jefferson, and Marshall -- what have you heard? Cass county doesn't have their scanners online so I can listen -- just looking for information. Right now we praying the wind doesn't change direction.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Crap -- they've been evacuated, they had just a few minutes to get out. Wind direction changed. Don't know where they've ended up until I get a call.

Hope you and yours are safe.

My parents lost their house yesterday, off of 1619. That fire keeps growing and eating everything.

This guy is doing great stuff -- has the live scanner of linden on a feed, takes calls and in the chat locals share their info.

So sorry to hear about your parents' house. It's a cliche I know, but at least they are safe.

I lost all my "memories" about 20 years ago...baby pictures, my grandmother's locket, my son's original birth certificate with his tiny little footprint. It's odd how much it hurts sometimes even now...and you miss the oddest things.

I live in Cass county about 2 miles north of the fire's present position. the wind is supposed to switch to the south later tonight, and we could get wiped out. if you look at the remote sensing data on the MODIS website, you can watch them SETTING THE FIRES, in a pattern that is obvious.

many Texas Forest service employees were laid off in the past 5 years, and these guys have been known to light fires to get overtime.

They say it's 80% contained, I just don't believe it.

My family has been salvaging through the ashes of their house and had to run off some looters. Good thing the first thing my parents saved from the house before evacuating was all the rifles.

That was a smart thing to do. It's hard to decide what to take or leave to burn...but guns are protection. I'm in southern Harrison County, yesterday was very smoky but cleared up today. They were dumping water on the fires from Lake of the Pines all day yesterday.

We need a big downpour of rain so badly, then a soaking rain for a few weeks. At the very least. That darned high pressure is still sitting on top of us. I don't get my hopes up anymore.

It's hell on earth. I hope Nate will bring the rain. Finally they started doing the air drops! He had to leave most of his ammo and reloading supplies though; however, the troopers said it was very festive when the fire went through. Here's to hoping this ends soon, we can't take much more.

Thank you for sharing your story. They're still in shock, it's slowly hitting them. The night after it burned down I dreamed of the house and everything in it -- determined to replace it all.
