The problem is most of these health care providers don't take me serious because I look so young. Even though I have all the legal papers too know about and make these choices since he can't. |

| Newbie2011 User ID: 203277 09/06/2011 12:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi, I a Registered Nurse so I felt compelled to offer my opinion on the two types of catheter. The condom catheter covers the head of the penis much like a condom. It is much easier to apply and has a significantly lower rate of infection than the "foley" which is an indwelling cather. Placement of the indwelling cather must be done under septic conditions with sterile gloves, betadine solution for cleansing the area and proper placement techniques (pushing the foley down the urethra) and ultimately filling the balloon with the appropriate amount of water to prevent accidental removal. The infection risk of an indwelling catheter is significantly higher and may lead to septicemia would could be deadly. Many are unaware that this was the cause of the Pope John Paul's death "urinary catheter related sepsis". If I may be of any assistance, simple private message me. Good luck and if it were my family member, I would select the condom catheter. It is easy to apply and remove with risk of damaging the urethra, and painless. |

Props to you for helping out a person and giving them a great explanation of the differences between the two. Good karma is incoming for the extra step of going in-depth on the risk of the indwelling catheter. That was very friggin admirable, and I wish we had somebody like you on the hospital staff when my wife's grandpa was in the hospital. Would have saved both him and my wife's family some trouble and heart ache. I was able to interpret and translate some of the stuff that was being presented to them into laymans terms...but not all of it. I'm just a figment of your imagination ;-) |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1258755 09/06/2011 03:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | the condom catheter can cause some serious irritation and then when you go to put it on you can not find the hiding organ to place it on...it draws backwards and refuses to be subjugated to the torment. pull ups and tear a ways and frequent cleansing Aloe Vesta Cleansing foam 1 bathe and cleaner is the absolute best it does not have to be rinsed it lowers PH balance to keep scald away it cleans like a moose instead of the pans and basins and rags that abrade in scrubbing with soaps that do not get rinsed off and scald..the foam can do perineal as well as body and hair..it is a little costly but it is worth it. At night when bed time is so the man can get the rest he needs instead of tormented by either bladder retention or dribbling that scald or flooding the bed and having people pull and drag and keep him up so he gets no needed rest.....straight catheter it empties the bladder for him and gives him rest he needs and it keeps the UTI that comes from bladder retention from causing him even more problems...it is easy to do and it is not that mean or terrible of a thing to the man it looks worse than it truly is...it is easy and you can do it at home.. |

Once you urinate it tends to slide off and especially if you try and sleep with it on it almost never stays on. With that being said it is more comfortable and easier to administer in my opinion. Just have to keep a check on it and make sure it stays in place to avoid a wet bed. | Anonymous Coward User ID: 1486940 09/06/2011 04:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The word catheter sends chills up my spine. After my kidney transplant last year, my new kidney began working like gangbusters, and then, the catheter I had post-surgically blocked with a clot, and.... no one would fix it. I was screaming for my life, sure that my bladder would actually explode. It was like some sick form of torture, could not describe it. I think I have post-traumatic catheter disorder or something. That condom one sounds pretty cool. Catheters suck. I'm a chick, tho, so no such luck. |

Thank you so much for all your great info it was just what I needed. The doc's here aren't very helpful when I ask questions, so I'm glad someone on here is willing to take the time to do so. I may end sending you a private message at some point if I have more questions if you don't mind? |
