Re: Loud explosion sounds in East Tennessee right now!!!
I'm not sure if this is similar, but it reminded me of something my friend experienced about a week ago. She wrote me at night asking if there was thunder at my house. We live in the mountains of Maryland, a 10 or 15-minute drive from each other, but have different weather sometimes--this year she got a freak hail storm when I didn't, and vice versa.

Anyway, she writes again almost immediately saying it can't be thunder and that it's scaring the hell out of her. It was a loud, repetitive boom. I couldn't hear anything at my house and there weren't any thunderstorms in the region. It lasted for about 20 minutes. We went through all the possibilities of what it could be in this area and came up with nothing. I'll ask her to check out the video to see if it's the same noise.

Here in Tokyo, I heard that noise for only 5 minutes last night while the floor I was sleeping on was rippling a little. It also felt as if I was moving in a fast car.

The sound has been changing since March. Sometimes it sounds like a plane. Other times it sounds like wind in a tunnel. Then sometimes it is a rumbling sound.

It's not traffic as Tokyo shuts down after 2am. It's not ships. It's not planes. I never heard these noises before this year.

I've heard this in England. Most recently, Last Saturday night at precisely 11 pm.

Preceding this, there was a firework display about 2 miles away which ended just before 10.30 that night. Firework displays are not permitted to continue after 10.30. The usual variation of sounds from pops to whizzes, crackles and larger bangs towards the end. Unmistakable fireworks. It is quite a regular event.

These later, strange booming bangs were clearly and most definitely, not part of this firework display, I would describe the sound as distant large fireworks - the one's that usually end the firework shows. Big deep but sharp sounds. Not unlike OP's recording. The sounds actually scared me. We have no military base nearby. It lasted for about 8 minutes in total, with short gaps in-between periods of regular and continuous bangs.

In case this is related to the boom in Maryland: Within the last week there were two small quakes on the border of West Virginia and Ohio, almost directly west from us. I doubt it would have any effect here--the largest was a 3.1 and it's a decent distance away--but you never know. We felt the VA quake here. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

Re: Loud explosion sounds in East Tennessee right now!!!
Funny you should mention this.

Hubby and I live just south of Chattanooga. "Lee" hit us hard, 9-10" of rain. Lots of flooding and power outages.

When it first started raining, Hubby and I both kept hearing long, low rumbling sounds. The rumbles lasted far too long to be thunder, and it wasn't airplanes. We didn't feel any vibrations or movement. Just the rumble sounds.

Then twice in the last 3-4 hours I've heard two "soft explosions", for lack of a better way to describe them. Close-sounding, but muffled. When the first "explosion" happened, our power came back on. A few minutes later, there was a second "explosion". The power went off, then came back on a few seconds later. It wasn't a sudden, loud explosion like a transformer blowing. It was more like a muffled pop.

No idea what either of the sounds were. The "soft explosions" may have been something the power company was doing, but I can't imagine what. (??)

The newspaper said August was the driest month this area has ever had. Maybe suddenly getting flooded with 9-10" of rain had some weird geological effect?

Re: Loud explosion sounds in East Tennessee right now!!!
This is spooky.

2 nights ago, around 11pm, there were loud booms
that lasted about 3 minutes total, one right after
the other. It sounded like cannons being fired.
Very LOUD cannons.

I am just N of Atlanta in a fairly densely populated area.
It was unnerving but the only thing I could think
was that it had to be fireworks in a nearby neighborhood.
Even though, at the time I thought it was the loudest
fireworks I had ever heard. I stepped outside for a
minute looking up at the sky just to see what I could
see but there are too many tall trees around me.

I had pretty much forgotten about it until I saw this post.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1006869

my post

I wanted to add that after thinking about it, it was
probably longer than 3 minutes because I had time to go
outside, then come in and talk to my mother. She lives
next door and called me scared because apparently the
sound waves were strong enough to rattle her BR window
and she thought someone was trying to get in.
Also, when it first started it seemed to all be coming
from one certain direction but near the end right
before it started to die down, the booms seemed to
move around and come from another direction.

I've heard rumbling in SoCal as well a couple of times. I thought it was maybe since I live next to a small airport but no jets fly in so it can't be that and since we never get any rain, it couldn't be a storm. I've gone out to look but I never see anything.

I'm about 4 hours to your north in Virginia.

Not hearing any noises, but there was 3 seperate levels of clouds today in the sky. The first was a huge area of ripple that was perfectly still. The second was a smear between the ripple and black. It moved slightly.

The third were VERY DARK ominous clouds that moved very quickly, hung low, and spun in circles. No tornado watches were ever put out.

Lots of "little white dots" flying around in the sky. Like jets, but with no trails behind them. We counted four

I am about to go outside for a bit, I'm having real trouble with my asthme today. Will let you know if I hear anything.

Last time I was in Gatlinburg I noticed a lot of Russian women working in the restaurants in many of cities around there. I suspected there might be Russian UN soldiers hid somewhere in the area.

So whats the assumption here? for those that heard it in person what about the noise was so unusual that it deserved a thread? it does have a consistent beat to it. like a ground thumper used in construction. but sounds even deeper in tone. like an explosion. so if what I hear in the video is right and not altered. I can deduce that this noise is man made. leaving 2 theory's. either construction related or some kind of underground blasting. does not sound like gunshots to me! unless they are on some kind of timer. colorado seems a hotspot for ehh big G activity. perhaps there is a city being constructed below your feet.
