DESTROY BY FIRE,IE Boot and nuke is a good one

Fire is really not even enough anymore :)
not unless you physically melt the platters.

Removal of the HD is the only "safe" way to ensure saftey.

Partition recovery FTW! You can format...we can go back in time. :)

Re: How to wipe clean a Laptop?
The DOD level wipe is simply the drive being formatted multiple times. 3 to 5 times will do the trick. Just be sure to do a LOW level format. It should take minutes to hours, not seconds.

Then do the next user a favor and install a Linux OS.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1460682

deleting the current partition and installing a new partition will do the same thing even better. You can't bring back an old partition once a new one is in place. It's just as effective as dod format. Once the partition is overwritten with a new one, the old can't be brought back. If you do not write a new partition, you could still get the old back.

Best bet is low level format using debug. Wipes it back to factory, but you will STILL need to make a new partition to ensure it's no longer available.

I could get those files back with just a "reformat". Trust me.

Delete the partition then make a new one, then format the drive. All the previous is GONE!!!

sorry GOtW I can't agree with that. yes the partition is overwritten but there is still residual data left on the hard drive even if you re-partition, re-format and re-install the OS. I have done forensic data recovery in the past and was still able to recover full and partial files after this type of procedure was done. The safest way short of destroying the drive and buying a new one is to overwrite every block of the disk at least 3 times with random data.

You have to do two things. Re install the bios and low level format the hard drive. A low level format will take all day to do depending on the drive. At my old job it was standard policy to trash the drives after use.

if you dont have the recovery disks you could install ubuntu linux it is quite user friendly and has good hardware support, even has a free version of 'office' compatible software

That's right... I assume that when i say format, a new clean partition should be made, that is the way i always have done.. No posibility of rescue any data when you blew the partition on the disk.

thats true. unless the OP worked for the govt with high security clearance or was a CP freak, a re-partition, re-format and re-install would suffice. :D

Re: How to wipe clean a Laptop?
Maybe like the one guys said, remove the drive (get yourself a nice little laptop drive to usb case) then make sure it boots from cdrom, and leave a ubuntu in there LOL

Now no way to save anything to the drive, it's not there!! But the computer is still usable LOLOL

Re: How to wipe clean a Laptop?
bleach the drive 5 times minimum. This is NSA standard. Then fill entire drive with erroneous data, bleach 5 more times. If done correctly no info even if forensically tested will ever show back up.

Send it to the FBI. They have a special division that will wipe the hard drive clean for those in need free of charge.

You sure on that, FBI couldn't even get out a four walled box. They are extremely incompetent/and inept, after watching them in action outside in General Population and inside the Federal Prisons posing as Federal Inmates.

DBAN

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. I think you mean drive wipe, right OP?

I use CCleaner which is fast, stable, has many functions & is freeware:

[link to www.piriform.com]

Drive wipe & free space wipe options in <tools> <drive wiper>
I recommend WIPING the drive completely using D.O.D 3 pass wipe or higher. Unless the drive is analysed forensicly, nothing should be recoverable.
