Re: Massive power outage in San Diego/Orange County/Tijuana/Parts of AZ
Just reported on local LA KCAL Channel 9 news that the cause was an employee moving equipment...WTF????

Really, that seems like a load of BS! What about the explosion reported by people near the Salton Sea? I doubt some dumb bonehead would accidentally move equipment on one of the hotter days of the year and it would take out the entire power grid extending into AZ and Mexico!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1071143

Our best guess on page 4 of this other thread:

Thread: Breaking -New York and DC Going Under HOMELAND SECURITY ALERT & Multi City Multi State Sudden Power Outage (Page 4)

...is that the massive power outage was initiated when there was a geothermal explosion in/near the Salton Sea.

There were multiple witnesses who heard a very loud explosion in that location.

The idea is that the geothermal explosion was so hot that the heat charged the grid up and blew it.

The explosion came from what channel 3 (multiple viewers) said was the abandoned area near the Salton Sea that is on this video.

This area is the southern tip of the San Andreas fault in the salton Seismic Zone, as well as the Cerro Prieto Geothermal area and the Brawley Seismic Zone and geothermal area.

Salton Sea explosion was very likely NOT geothermal but MILITARY they have a massive bomb range at Salton Sea, with many unexploded munitions, here is the full US Army report on the abandoned munitions, likelihood of their danger, and how to remove them...

And here is an excerpt from chapter 4:

MUNITIONS AND EXPLOSIVES OF CONCERN FINDINGS
4.1 GENERAL INFORMATION
This chapter details the overall Data Quality Objectives (DQOs), MEC history, and
inspection activities for the site. Based on a review of historical records, previous
studies, and current conditions at the Salton Sea BT #60 site, it was determined by the
TPP Team that there is a potential for MEC and/or MD to be present at the site. The TPP
Team agreed that the chemical composition of MEC and potential MC would be
consistent for the evaluation of all Salton Sea water targets and would include all
potential MEC currently identified for the individual Salton Sea water targets.
4.1.1 Qualitative Reconnaissance
As agreed to at the TPP Meeting, no QR or MC sampling was conducted within
MRS01 – Practice Bomb Range #1 or MRS02 – Practice Bomb Range #2 because both
are under water.

Hey guess what everyone...

This just in:

Power company employee caused massive blackout, utility says

An Arizona power company said Thursday that a worker probably caused the power outage that left large parts of Southern California and the surrounding region in the dark.

APS, which is Arizona’s largest electric utility said a power line was tripped near Yuma, Ariz., at 3:30 p.m. Thursday during maintenance work.

"The outage appears to be related to a procedure an APS employee was carrying out in the North Gila substation, which is located northeast of Yuma," an APS press release said. "Operating and protection protocols typically would have isolated the resulting outage to the Yuma area. The reason that did not occur in this case will be the focal point of the investigation into the event, which already is underway."

San Diego Gas & Electric said it is attempting to begin restoring power in some areas. But they said the outage might last into Friday evening in some areas.

More than 1.4 million people in a large swath of Southern California and beyond were affected as a blackout brought normal life to a halt.

Right! Not everyone understand the seriousness of this. If the grid goes down we go back to horse and buggy era. Everything comes to a stand still. No way to pay your bills online, no way to recharge cell phones, eventually you can't get gas for your car so you can't travel, you can't work because you don't have a computer and everything now is paperless for the most part and the list goes on and on.

WE have a HORRIBLE design. It's totally flawed. I am surprised that we have gone this long without serious drama/doom. Really, it's awful. It's a wonder we have made it this long.

Some could be without power until Saturday

An unprecendented power outage led to controlled chaos Thursday throughout San Diego County and surrounding areas as 1.4 million residents coped with the sudden loss of electricity, and officials say power will be restored in waves through Saturday.

The outage began at 3:38 p.m. after a 500-kilovolt high-voltage line from Arizona to California failed, triggering a cascade of events that then knocked the San Onofre nuclear power plant offline. Those are the two major power sources for the region.

Besides the county, affected customers reside in eastern Arizona, Baja California and southern Orange County. The power failure led to school and business closures, suspended water service in some areas, flight cancellations, blacked-out traffic lights, silent radio stations and trapped elevator passengers. Public schools throughout the county and several high-education institutions will be closed Friday...

It won't take much for people to start looting/rioting. We could very well be on the verge of massive doom. I say that because August had no job growth, we have an usurper in the white house, global economic markets are on the verge of collapsing and we are on the verge of comet/rogue planet doom later this month. Now if one were to speculate on everything that is happening this month, one could *speculate* that if Bible prophecy is true, the stage is being set for total collapse, world war and the entrance of the AC. I'm NOT saying that is what is happening, just throwing out another doom scenario lolsign

No its purely because of the unknown reason. Obviously in the back of everyone's mind no one believes the story.

Why is a simple power outage controlled chaos in S. California, but a much longer power outage coming from a hurricane and torrential rains does not cause chaos on the east coast?

Is it cultural?

Well those rains are common and predicted. You expect them to happen.

These power outages are sudden and people just don't know what's going on.

I mean if you see a huge storm and the power goes out, ok the storm caused it.

imagine you're at work and the power just completely goes out for no apparent reason. Phone lines are dead you can't get a hold of anyone. Its confusion and chaos, people over there probably thought "terrorism, aliens, nuclear explosion" you really just don't know what hit you.

And ill chime in and say that its very hard to believe one person randomly knocked over a chord and shut down power for half the west coast.
