I'm in san diego and this sucks, ran out of beer and can't get any food because everything is closed. Can't get cash from ATMs, and can't pay with debit or credit in the daytime at liquor stores. Only cash, so if you don't have any then you're assed out. Everything, is at, a HALT! :( and I'm starving cuz I live on my own, can't cook and its super hot with no AC

when power restores keep some can's of tuna or chicken in your cupboard, also soup, you can eat those straight out of the can when you are hungry. Doesn't matter if they are hot or not if your hungry enough, LOL

Two Nuclear Reactors At The San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant

The blackout affecting large swaths of San Diego County led to a shutdown of two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant. Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison, said the power outage did not cause any safety issues.

Alexander said a fluctuation in power caused the reactors to shut down at 3:38 p.m. but that the overall plant continues to have power.

He said the system worked as it was supposed to during a loss of power. Across San Diego, businesses are closed, traffic is snarled and the trolley system is down. San Diego International Airport was on backup generators.

There were reports that power was also out in southern Orange County, Imperial County, Tijuana, Arizona and Palm Springs.

any nuclear reactor that "SCRAMs" and shuts itself
down is definitely in a safe conditions.
the problem is that once a reactor is shut down
it takes many many days to get that suckers
running again...

just wanna say...it is definitely NOT an emp attack. Why? Because it actually takes out all small electronics...and all newer cars..
 Quoting: Butterfly girl

Unless it was a selective EMP attack.
 Quoting: HANGFIRE

That is bullshit you idiot. There cannot be a "selective" EMP attack. If it's big enough to blow out the power grid it's big enough to take out small electronics. Guess you did not pay attention during your electrical engineering studies.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1541425

You don't think they have these EMPs honed to a sharp edge? I do. I think they can bust any frequency they choose. They could blow out your butt vibrator n not phase your electric razor. These people are diabolical!
 Quoting: HANGFIRE

apparently why bother with the hassle of an emp? Just get a good pair of wire cutters and take out one fifth of california...with one snip...

Re: Massive power outage in San Diego/Orange County/Tijuana/Parts of AZ
Why is a simple power outage controlled chaos in S. California, but a much longer power outage coming from a hurricane and torrential rains does not cause chaos on the east coast?

Is it cultural?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1456495

Well those rains are common and predicted. You expect them to happen.

These power outages are sudden and people just don't know what's going on.

I mean if you see a huge storm and the power goes out, ok the storm caused it.

imagine you're at work and the power just completely goes out for no apparent reason. Phone lines are dead you can't get a hold of anyone. Its confusion and chaos, people over there probably thought "terrorism, aliens, nuclear explosion" you really just don't know what hit you.

And ill chime in and say that its very hard to believe one person randomly knocked over a chord and shut down power for half the west coast.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1531674

Absolutely. When someone cut the line INTENTIONALLY in the Bay Area and it COMPLETELY cut off Santa Cruz County and other ares from the rest of central California, it was FREAKY.

The power went out on a beautiful sunny day. There was NO reason for the power to go out. It was not a heat wave. There was ZERO communication in or out of our area with the rest of the world.

It caused alot of concern and confusion. And we are a small town area with a sliver of freeway running through it. We are not a large metropolitan area like the area affected.

half the west coast? that's an exaggeration.

SOMEONE FROM CALIFORNIA....please answer...
How is another country (mexico) on the same grid as the US?
Are people from Mexico paying their electric bill to the same company that supplies electric to california and Arizona? I dont get it and never heard of this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1055324

No offense but we probably pay there power bill!
 Quoting: closing eyes

Why not? We, the tax paying American CITIZEN pay for everything else for those SOB's, why not their electric?

Next time....

kerosene lamps
fire extinguishers
water
camp stove
and remember your hot water heaters have 30 to 50 gallons of potable water

Oh, and a couple of good books to read by lamplight;
One to read to your children
and one to read with your lover.......

 Quoting: Tatlantis

That number is for Orange County alone. I am on the East side of San Diego and have had power for over an hour. Looking in every direction I can see lights, even in parts of the downtown area, and for as far as I can see to my South and East. I am at a higher elevation and I can assure you that power has been restored to tens if not hundreds of thousands of customers already here in the San Diego area.
