Used to pay $700 a year, now pay nearly a $1000 a year. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1518917 Home insurance has started to skyrocket, 20-30% increases fairly common on upcoming renewals. Live in IL - Chicago area here too, OP. The property taxes are beyond sane, and sure as hell not going down no matter how much your property has decreased in value. Gotta love that ethanol, sure helped hold down our foreign oil imports...!!! |

Last thing i want to see is you bragging about your 85k. go to hell. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1455907 You obviously do not live in a high cost of living area like Chicago, new York, DC, LA, etc or you would not be surviving at all; $20K a year will not even cover the rent in a drive-by-shooting hood in one of those metro areas. Then move if ya have to! Some people cannot because the only job they have is there and/or are stuck with an underwater mortgage & cannot sell. In this economy, it is better to stick with a job you do have and barely scrape by than to quit & hope to get another one in a lower cost of living area; that is before we even discuss the cost of moving. For a single person that could be more doable, but for a person with a family, not as much so. There is always the option of move out and rent, and then rent out your house etc., which would require simplifying your lifestyle, however, many Americans refuse to let go of their toys and extras. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1029401 United States 09/09/2011 03:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 85K in certain locals is like 20K in a low cost area. Hell, I visited San Fran a while back, and it is absolutely insane on what things cost. Although 85K may sound like a lot, it really depends where that person is located. 85K in a hilly billy town in the midwest or southwest? You would be living like a king... in NY or LA - your dirt ass poor... because you don't qualify for any assistance, and have to pay for everything out of pocket. |

I was in the same boaat but knew this shit was coming and sold my big house in 2005 and bought a small place in the country. It was a painful change but it made sense. I ran out of money during the divorce and needed to put some of my lawyer fees on this card. I'm slowly paying this down, however, and hopefully can get it paid off by the end of the year (the original balance was much much higher). I don't really have any "toys" like a boat, or fancy car, or something like that. I don't take any vacations. I don't believe my lifestyle qualifies as excessive or outside my means. Just saying if things continue to increase in costs, eventually I will "erode away" .... If you are still single you might want to get a roommate. I take it you might not want to move since you lost value in your home so a roommate can help with that mortgage. Might even think about a couple of roommates depending on the size of your home. |
