First clear night in a long time!
I think I missed the supernova.

In other news, I'm going to hunt those lights that move across the sky from midnight to 2am or so....sometimes earlier though. They're just these dim white lights that are a fraction of the brightness of most really visible stars. Anyone who lives outside the city and away from lights should take a look.

In order to focus your eyes, keep the lights/computer dim up to the point of going outside, use a flashlight (preferably red flashlight) and lay out in one of your lawn chairs and look up! If cars pass by, close your eyes until they pass. All inside lights off.

Focus on the brightest stars first, then start working to more and more dim stars until you can barely see the lightest stars visible. Once you do this, focus on just a tiny bit of a brighter star (one you can focus on that isn't super faint, but faint enough).

Eventually you may see something pass by...it will be about as faint as the most faint visible star, or maybe just a tad brighter...in bad atmospheric conditions, I can hardly keep hold of the object and have to look just around the object to watch it travel. My first time, I saw 3 in about 2-3 hours. I'm just waiting on winter. If I see them in winter, they are definitely not satellites.

btw, these things don't flash, sparkle, change colors, etc. They are always white. No noise...they look to be rather high up, too.

I think I've seen the same - only once though. Not satellites indeed, very high up and not very fast (at least optically - from my point of view on the ground)

Yes! 23-46 seconds or so from one side of the horizon to the other. If you spend more time looking for them, they become much simpler to spot (barring being blinded by light in the eyes: cars, moon, etc)...moon is going to be out tonight, but I'll try anyways.

I'll bump once more for the night time crowd. I've posted about this in a few different manners, but nobody has admitted to have seen this other than one person that I used to spend time with (saw it with me) and you. So, while it's not rare...most people don't concentrate when they look up (or can't see it due to vision problems). I don't know how well telescopes would do, but maybe night vision goggles would help? I'm still tempted to buy a "cheap" pair of those just to see.

I'm sure I've heard of them before, here on GLP. Might have been from you. But if we've seen them others have too.

I hope there's a reasonable, out-of-this-world explanation for these lights :)
There was a great sky with a lot of lightning here tonight and I've seen a couple of ufo's that looked suspiciously like Chinese lanterns...
but these things are something different.

goodnight
