Re: Volcanic watch for NZ volcanoes
I am not trying to scream the sky is falling - this is an honest observation that perhaps others who know more, can help me with.

I have been checking on the NZ volcanoes since our Geonet advised us in May that it looked like Ruapehu was awakening. They have since said that all has calmed down i.e. lake temps cooling.

However, the extra things they check on i.e. lake temps wouldn't be very easy to do through winter so we haven't had any extra updates for the past 3/4 months.

I can only check on the drums and charts provided on the Geonet site.

For the past two days there has been evidence of some sort of explosion (obviously small) but it is not a usual thing you see on the drums.

Today, another sort of explosion and/or quake happened. So I think its time to have a thread that kiwis can come to and add their 2 cents as to what is going on.

Below is a link to todays drum showing some sort of action.

[link to www.geonet.org.nz]

This is a link to two examples that try and explain what these seismos are picking up. The above could be an explosion or a quake swarm.

This is an explosion example:
[link to www.geonet.org.nz]

This is a swarm example:

[link to www.geonet.org.nz]

On checking all other drums in the area there is no sign of a quake - which points me towards an explosion.

The other interesting thing. Is that both drums for Ruapehu and Tongariro show no wind noise disturbance, whilst Nguarahoe shows heavy disturbance. (For those are are not kiwis these three volcanoes stand in a row with Nguarahoe in the middle). I hope it is wind and not harmonic.

Isn't volcanic activitiy relatively common for Mt. Ruapehu.
I found this on Wikipedia:

In recorded history, major eruptions have been about 50 years apart,[1] in 1895, 1945 and 1995–1996. Minor eruptions are frequent, with at least 60 since 1945. Some of the minor eruptions in the 1970s generated small ash falls and lahars (mudflows) that damaged skifields.[2]

Yes u are correct with your info there.

But maybe not so normal that there seems to be corresponding action at various other nz volcanoes at the same time.

And there have been fresh volcanic quake swarms in that area and 2 other volcanic areas recently.

Here are the next few;

UPDATE:
Another NINE hours, and the energy around the South Pacific islands is still exploding, even increasing a bit in intensity.

Thursday July 7 2011, 09:10:52 UTC 9 hours ago Kermadec Islands region 6.0

Thursday July 7 2011, 09:29:58 UTC 9 hours ago Kermadec Islands region 5.5 22.0

Thursday July 7 2011, 13:07:23 UTC 5 hours ago Kermadec Islands, New Zealand 5.3 24.4

Thursday July 7 2011, 13:47:01 UTC 5 hours ago south of the Kermadec Islands 5.0 29.4

Thursday July 7 2011, 14:53:53 UTC 3 hours ago south of the Kermadec Islands 5.3 40.3
Thursday July 7 2011, 14:53:53 UTC 3 hours ago south of the Kermadec Islands 5.3 40.3

My point here is that we cant rely on geonet to inform us about things.

Here is a post from yet another thread;

"Speaking of unusual quake activity ...

That spot in the Kermadec Islands/trench is going nuts. In the last couple of days, after that big one out of nowhere, there has been 40 quakes there, all greater than 4.7M, and are relatively shallow.

What thread was that? Would like to know where they are getting their info from. I can tell there are quakes from the drums - but nothing else.

Re: Volcanic watch for NZ volcanoes
I think both those people made their lists from usgs.
But now usgs are not listing or removing so many quakes that its harder to find these quakes.

There have been bugger all out there just lately.
gabe says that volcanic activity can relieve quake pressure, so i wonder if that recent activity out there is the reason.
Its gone quite quiet again volcanically too again hasnt it.
And ngauruhoe has also settled down.

What is intriguing me is that u can see them all clearly responding to the jolly alignment dates that gabe, nin and many others talk about.

I am on my cell ph, son has computer now.

When i get it back i will post links to those threads and to some sites to find quakes on.

by the way, when my son got up and saw my computer glitch, he said he hopes it isnt an omen that we are going to get 11 quakes today. Yikes!

Edit, actually i think it was Q who i asked about the volcanic affecting quakes thing, not gabe.

That was remarkable how all the red dissapeared from the auckland thermo straight after that big fiji quake the other day.

lol, sure got my point across!! lol,
Na havn't noticed any tag ons from geonet !, mind you the places we go on the net ?! i'm surprised my comp hasn't been fried and the black choppers come and taken it and me away by now !.
My last computer got fried majorly big time last year, got onto a FBI or CIA site and bang, hard drive absolutely trashed, lol.

Yup saw the 4.0 down CHCH ways, still they were having them like every hour for most of the year !, the Volcanoes look way too quiet in the north island, should at least be some activity, Ngauruhoe is my favourite, every now and then He gives everything a nudge !, just my interpretation.
Anyway, good work Tauranga and Op (keep smiling), you guys have been doing lotsa monioring, good to be able to jump on here now and again and get a bit of a heads up !
I'm going for a road trip around this next weekend comming, lol, inland, up high for a sniff around, 24-25-26-27 I wanna be travelling with the bug out bags !
The Denver / Obama / Elenin / Nasa / Sattelite etc stuff is intriguing IMO, lol

bump for the thread !
