Lake Erie burps and nearby residents smell it

ERIE, Pa. -- State and federal environmental officials are trying to determine the cause of a big stink reported along Lake Erie.

Hundreds of residents called authorities or the National Weather Service yesterday to report the smell, which has been variously described as like gasoline, natural gas or even decaying garbage and rotten eggs. The smell was strongest yesterday morning when a cold front swept through the area, churning up larger than normal waves from Erie to Dunkirk, N.Y., officials said.

Scientists said tests run so far aren´t conclusive, but they believe the churning waters may have released some naturally occurring gases that are normally trapped beneath the lake´s deeper waters. Decaying plants and fish washed ashore by the waves could also be contributing to the stench.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection biologist Jim Grazio said the wave-churning theory makes sense because the smell lessened when the waves diminished.

"It´s like the lake burped, and then the burp passed by us," Grazio said."

Could this mean earthquake faultlines or cracks in the earth? are now releasing gasses? Is this a precursor of some kind?

Talk about stinky weather.

Some thought the awful smell was from garbage or gasoline. Others knew it had to be raw sewage or natural gas.

Methane Burp - methane is lighter than air but the heavier hydrocarbons butane, propane are not and diffuse from burp zero.

Lake Erie does have a history of some tectonic activity ... with small EQ´s occuring on a regular basis SW of this location by about 50 miles (off Ashtabula).

There has been no recent (last many 10´s of thousands of years) volcanic activity in that part of the country ... but "smells" that suddenly appear from nowhere do tend to give you "pause".

Yep!

It could also have something to do with the equatorial bulge adjusting from the last ice age.

This incident is probably related to the Michigan Crack, it pushed UP.

Let's hope the great lakes area isn't going to wake up!

To get a better understanding

"On August 21, 1986, possibly triggered by a landslide, Lake Nyos suddenly emitted a large cloud of CO2, which suffocated 1,700 people and 3,500 livestock in nearby villages.[2] Though not completely unprecedented, it was the first known large-scale asphyxiation caused by a natural event."

If it smells like rotten eggs, it's hydrogen sulfide.

The simple rule of thumb in the oil patch was, if you smell it, RUN.

Methane, CH4, is a colorless, odorless, flammable gas that burns with a faintly blue flame. "Natural gas," used by many North Americans for heating and cooking, is primarily methane (>90%). The 'gas odor' is from an added substance so that gas leaks can be detected. Pure methane has no odor

The water levels in the great lakes are also on a cycle. No kidding. I posted it here years ago - God knows where it is in the archives.

Thinking it was a 27 year cycle, but that would be more accurately like that 30 year warming/30 year cooling cycle off the pacific as the impetus. 30 years of more moisture would rise the levels, and the opposite true as well.

Hello,

Showing on the bird-kill map, therewas also a bird-kill at the West/South (left end on map) end of the lake; and itis well known by the locals, that never swim in the lake, that itis used for a cess pool . . . and itis rumored that Rothschild hasbeen dumping Mercury in the GreatLakes . . .

CorporateSociety has to get rid of their waste somehow.

Where would you suggest all this waste be dumped?

I think it should be dumped down volcanoes.

Truth will set you free John 8:32
