[link to www.nytimes.com] What’s to Be Done With 15 Feet of Snow in June? Utah Knows “The snowpack we have right now is 525 percent of normal,” said Brian McInerney, the hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Utah. “The lower level snowpack from 7,500 to 6,000 feet is already gone, but the mid-elevation snow from about 7,500 to 9,000 feet is still there.” He added: “Our soils were already saturated starting in March due to a heavy rainfall in early spring. Now, if you try to ride or hike on these soils, they will still be wet, still be saturated. If you use the trails at all, especially for mountain biking, it’s going to screw them up.” The most serious consequence of the huge snowpack in the Wasatch Mountains may be lurking well below the summits, especially if the weather changes rapidly to the typically hot northern Utah temperatures of late June and July. “Once it starts going, the inertia of melting snowpack goes pretty fast,” McInerney said. The speed of the melt has state officials concerned about flooding. Some rivers have already breached their banks and inundated homes and hundreds of acres of farmland. And though snow-riders are still loving the snow, it remains a threat, a vast rush of water just waiting to pour down on the valleys below. Last Edited by Sedi on 09/15/2011 08:33 PM |

On another note, I spent last week checking out the Kickapoo River area, inspired by your thread from a while back. Stayed three nights in Wildcat Mountain State Park. Gorgeous area and beautiful weather the whole week. Ontario, WI is kind of a dump, but lots of other beautiful little towns nearby and great produce from the Amish farmers. |

Funny thing is, I used to live almost due west of the Kickapoo River area, over near Caledonia, MN, which is also part of the Driftless Zone, and I never heard of the Kickapoo River till your thread. Near the end of my week, I camped at Nugget Lake County Park, which is near Plum City. Within Nugget Lake there is a land deformation that has caused the old limestone seabed, which was deposited in nearly perfect horizontal layers, to bend nearly vertical. Geologists speculate that it was possibly caused by a meteor strike. Diamonds have been found there, and a type of gold called "flour" is found there. There was even a sign in the park warning gold panners not to excavate the banks of Rock Elm Creek, lest they lose their panning privileges. Thar's gold in them thar hills! P.S. - sorry to go off topic here. |

I do know that we broke high temperature records for 45 days in a role. |

I am a West coast native :) My first time being in that much snow. My family of 3 boys, my hubby and I lived in a 2 room cabin. No hot water or bathroom. We had to shovel a path to the outhouse and I had to boil water to do dishes by hand. Never in my life had I thought I would be doing that in -40 degree weather! Props to you sweet crazy people who make Great Lake states your home :) LOL I couldn't wait to get back to Washington state. BUT...I did manage to learn some great skills! |
