Re: Am I the only one that liked Government Cheese?
My grandma gave me Ovaltine.

ohno
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." Amen.

When I was growing up, my grandma always got government blocks of cheese. I always remember it being real tasty american cheese.

What happened to that cheese can it be bought?

My grandma grew up in the depression, and she would bring us free cheese and butter when I was a kid...I remember asking why she would stand in line for it when she had the money to just buy it...when I got older I realized it was just a way of life for her. If there was a sale on soap or toilet paper she'd buy cases of it...free napkins from restaurants, matches from the bank, she was a trip!
 Quoting: BRIEF

I don't remember how she got it, but I do remember she had to go get this box of stuff once and awhile. She went to school till she was in 8th grade before she dropped out to help with money to raise the family. I really only remember the boxes of cheese, cans of peanut butter, and oats. Then durning nam era she go c-rat boxes with mixed stuff.

I was just talking about this with a friend the other day. I don't know why we got it, but I remember going with my grandmother to get the boxes of food. The cheese and peanut butter were the best!

Re: Am I the only one that liked Government Cheese?
the cheese was real cheese and not the processed crap one can buy at the grocers, as was the PB. it was good. I no longer eat cheese, but will only eat "real" PB, which is nothing more than ground up peanuts and salt. sometimes i just take a container of peanuts and grind them in my food processor - yummy and $ saving. sometimes you have to add a little oil depending on the type of peanut. i think if you have amish around you that you can still buy real cheese.

You can't BUY it....
 Quoting: Zero Point

If it can't be bought. Is it still the same? I remember it as a cheese that wasn't all processed. Just this solid block of good cheese in a brown cardboard box.

i used to feed it to the dog mixed with the white rice.....

the butter honey flour and cornmeal made really good corn bread.

It was called commodities. After my dad got out of the military, my parents had to get commodities for a few months.

And yes, that was some awesome cheese!

Remember during the war, WW1 and WW 2? they would give you those green stamps and they had to ration out the food because most of the meat went to the troops back then. Does anyone remember that?
My mother used to use those green stamps.
