Anonymous Coward User ID: 1363035 United States 09/16/2011 09:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It was the best. The Peanut Butter was good too. They don't have those programs anymore, unfortunately. I think it made a lot more sense than food stamps. Maybe a combination of the two would work. I don't know. Anyway, Velveeta is the closest thing to it you can buy. |
thehitchhiker (OP) User ID: 1382697 United States 09/16/2011 09:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think it was good back then but would probably be nasty now. It had to be the cheapest way to process cheese known to man. It was probably more oil than milk. I ate tons of it when i was younger and it was the bomb back then... I wouldn't eat it now... knowing that it was/is government regulated cheese. Quoting: Spirit_Tracker I just remember it being real tasty. You may be right though as I was younger then and didn't have developed taste buds. But I still remember it having a "cheese" flavor, unlike the velveeta or kraft american cheeses of today. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1552561 United States 09/16/2011 09:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They used to give it to charities. My aunt was dying of cancer, so she was given two boxes. She gave one to my father. That is how I ever wound up with it. We only ever had one box, so mostly I ate non-government cheese. The government cheese was good. What happened is this, in the 80s, Reagan bought cheese from farmers to be distributed through charitable organization. The cheese I ate would have been from the first year. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1468840 lol yeah, I use to do that. I'd be at my grandmas and ask to put the cheese back in the fridge on purpose, so I could cut off a extra chunk. Say Ya to Da UP eh' |

The early cheese was not made for the government. It was made to be sold to someone. So, it was premium cheese. I read Obama wants to have cheese destroyed. Food banks are begging for food. The government should buy it and hand it out. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 456756 United States 09/16/2011 09:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It was Bomgaards cheese made in Wisconsin, I believe. I remember having to eat that crap also. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 456756 And things haven't changed for the better since. So I guess that's a -1 on liking it? [link to www.bongards.com] There's a link. My memory was a little dim, but that was like 30 years ago. Actually, it was good cheese, I just didn't like the fact I had to stoop to that level, but hell things were worst during Ronny Rayguns rule out here in the sticks. Good luck to you. |

If this is true about Obama wanting to destroy cheese, I shall spend all my efforts to make sure he doesn't get relected as I love all kinds of cheese! ;) Whatever works Say Ya to Da UP eh' |

BRIEF User ID: 381742 United States 09/16/2011 09:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When I was growing up, my grandma always got government blocks of cheese. I always remember it being real tasty american cheese. Quoting: thehitchhiker What happened to that cheese can it be bought? My grandma grew up in the depression, and she would bring us free cheese and butter when I was a kid...I remember asking why she would stand in line for it when she had the money to just buy it...when I got older I realized it was just a way of life for her. If there was a sale on soap or toilet paper she'd buy cases of it...free napkins from restaurants, matches from the bank, she was a trip!
