Fijian Earthquake Depth 650 Klm's - Can someone explain the significance
I was just looking at the USGS and it appears that most of the quakes are relatively shallow but then noticed that the Fijian quakes are VERY DEEP!

[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

MAP 4.7 2011/09/16 02:51:44 -20.562 -179.001 650.6 FIJI REGION
MAP 7.3 2011/09/15 19:31:03 -21.559 -179.369 626.1 FIJI REGION
MAP 5.5 2011/09/15 11:59:53 -14.848 -177.812 370.0 FIJI REGION

Can someone explain the significance of the depth as these seem very much deeper than most other quakes.

Thanks.

It's common in that part of the world, something to do with the shape of the tectonic plates.

What makes you think there's any significance?

yes i will explain the signifcance

the earth goes down way deep and had earthqauke since the dawn of time

a deep earthquake means that it schakes less on top

Because the majority of quakes is much shallower and the last two - including the 7.3, were both over 600klm's deep.

I am just asking because it seems unusual to get 2 such large quakes occuring that deep although the last one was only a 4.7.

Even if it has no significance I am just asking for some intelligent input

Re: Fijian Earthquake Depth 650 Klm's - Can someone explain the significance
Agreed; damage to the surface (earths crust) is less by those earthquakes with greater depth. Ex: 20km-400-700km. The scale or magnitude 2.0 - to a - mega quake 8+. Is measured the same and not by its depth. The subduction and induction of tectonic plates and where they are located is definitely the most important thing to consider.

Atleast I think so, if your fear is that things are wrong. Youre right. :*)

Perhaps that's more where the original question/post came from. Lets re-ask this question to what is unknown of it.

What happens in the depths of Earth , where significant earthquakes 5.5+ occur in respects to surrounding tectonic plates, ridges, volcanoes and what's above- tsunami, hurricanes, tornadoes and further thunderstorms, floods and drastic changes in climate...extreme heat or cold! Yes, its all connected.

An earthquake happens near a fault line...the next will move. The water will move above. Thus changing wind and many more things.

Ask me about the fishbowl experiment.
