WTF? Auto Insurance added NEW exclusion clause agains civil war, insurrection, revolution
Just received my renewal notice and an updated auto insurance coverage policy. I noted the following NEW Exlusion which reads:

We are not responsible for "loss due to or as a consequence of:
a. Radioactive contamination;
b. Discharge of any nuclear weapon (even if accidental);
c. War (declared or undeclared);
d. Civil war;
e. insurrection; or
f. Rebellion or revolution"

WTF??? This clause was not in last year's policy! What do they know that we don't????? Must be getting ready for the STHTF! Obviously they don't want to get stuck with having to pay for damages occuring during any of the above events. But why add it now? Here's proof we're getting closer to chaos.

Re: WTF? Auto Insurance added NEW exclusion clause agains civil war, insurrection, revolution
There have always been certain exclusions in the personal auto policy. Here are some of the exclusions that apply to most policies:

Exclusions - No coverage exists for vehicles used to carry persons or goods for hire, for damage caused by wear and tear, freezing, breakdown or road damage to tires. Other excluded causes of loss include radiation/nuclear accidents, war, civil upheavals and loss to electronic entertainment equipment. Other ineligible situations are losses to owned camper bodies and trailers that aren't listed on the declarations, non owned autos used without permission, awnings, radar/laser detectors, custom furnishings/equipment for pickups or vans, non owned vehicles used in personal auto sales, repairs, storing or parking or other excluded businesses or vehicles used in races.

The radiation/nuclear, war, and civil unrest exclusions have been part of the personal auto policy for at least 20 years (as long as I've been in the insurance business). Your insurance company has probably updated their forms and they are required by law to provide a narrative as to the changes that were made. If you compare your new policy to your old policy, you most certainly will find these same exclusions.

Sorry, no doom here!

Re: WTF? Auto Insurance added NEW exclusion clause agains civil war, insurrection, revolution
Here's one example:

Help contain the expense of providing insurance - If your auto policy had to cover every imaginable loss, it would also have an unimaginable premium. Auto insurance is affordable only if insurance companies can exert some control over the losses their policies can be expected to cover. Therefore, automobile policies generally contain exclusions against accidents which involve:

injuries caused directly or indirectly by a nuclear weapon, reaction radiation or contamination; or by war, civil war, insurrection, rebellion or revolution.
injuries involving any vehicle inside a facility designed for racing while preparing for, or competing in, a race.

Just found mine. State Farm.

I knew about the other stuff, but this is what took me by surprise:

War, of all shapes and forms, is an area both homeowners and auto policies address in the fine print, with most excluding all losses related to war, undeclared war, civil war, insurrections, rebellion or revolution. "If the military needs to destroy your house or seize it for purposes of war, your insurance won't pay for the loss," added Griffin.

I have a copy of the most current, standard personal auto policy saved as a pdf. I'm not sure how to attach it but I can assure you that if you buy insurance from the majority of the auto insurance companies out there today, these same exclusions apply. I'm happy to send this document to anyone that can attach it. Thanks.

As long as they don't have any clause about zombie attacks, I am ok writing out my check to the insurance company.

No Zombie exclusions yet. They won't exclude Zombie damage until there have been at least a few confirmed attacks! :)

Re: WTF? Auto Insurance added NEW exclusion clause agains civil war, insurrection, revolution
I had state farm and switched to allstate because i got a bundle deal on my house ,bike and vehicles. The fine print in all three policies excludes loses for radioactive contamination or nuclear attack or accident, and losses incurred due to warfare of any kind, declared or otherwise.

Yep, if they're all concerned about it and excluding it like that, it's because they have a good idea it's coming.

this is the kind of hint we need to be looking for, a nuclear weapon going off the size of the one dropped on Hiroshima on a major American city could break any insurance company if they were forced to pay out for the losses.. So we can sort of surmise that we might see not only one or more nuclear 'discharges' in the US, we will probably see a civil war similar to the one in Yugoslavia. They all but admit they can't afford to insure against these things, so that means essentially the odds that they will happen are very high in the insurance companies estimation.
