| kfitz User ID: 1486313 09/17/2011 01:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm in Central New York, I just took the dog out and saw a bright star next to the moon. The problem is I didn't notice any other stars except one really faint one off in the other direction. Quoting: ISO Is there supposed to be a bright star near the moon? It's really bright. It even made a halo type glare on the passing thin clouds. i seen that same little bastard on my way home from work. it was the only star i even noticed. i am in canandaigua. |

Or a small telescope. Absolute magnitude 25.84 (bright as shit) Distance ~4.2 AU Download Stellarium for free if you don't have binocs or a telescope. It's not "live", but gives you all the good data. Great for amateur "astrominers". Last Edited by Writemeaticket Red on 09/17/2011 01:33 AM "Sycophantic butt-licker." (Apparently.) |

It is precisely because it is fashionable for Americans to know no science, even though they may be well educated otherwise, that they so easily fall prey to nonsense. They thus become part of the armies of the night, the purveyors of nitwittery, the retailers of intellectual junk food, the feeders on mental cardboard, for their ignorance keeps them from distinguishing nectar from sewage. — Isaac Asimov |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1552980 Does nobody have the ability to actually do some basic investigation before posting nowadays? Some just feed on doom bro. Deal with it or let it deal with you m8 :) Yeah, I know It just gets a bit annoying when there are a dozen threads on exactly the same thing, and not one of them had the wit to do a simple check on what's supposed to be visible before posting... |

Is it closer to earth than normal, as I have not seen it before? Any astronomers care to enlighten me? it looks like there is going to be an alignment between this bright star and half moon and this other less bright light to the left of the moon, about double the distance from the brighter object to the moon... we have been getting eary winds here the past couple of days, central alberta, CA |

People post things like this right away just in case it's a UFO and others will need to look fast to see it. People don't want to begin a Google investigation on an object they think might be a UFO. |
