Re: Bright star next to moon right now?
I'm in Central New York, I just took the dog out and saw a bright star next to the moon. The problem is I didn't notice any other stars except one really faint one off in the other direction.

Is there supposed to be a bright star near the moon? It's really bright. It even made a halo type glare on the passing thin clouds.

100% Venus, a slither of the moon, and Jupiter are all clearly visible...
But Venus is by far the brightest !!!

I don't get it i believe it's Jupiter but i have been seeing this star now for nearly one and a half years, almost on a nightly basis, i find that very odd because i thought Jupiter could only be seen for about six weeks per year,
just search glp their is usually at least one thread about it every week and going back the last 12 months

Re: Bright star next to moon right now?
Nope. Arcturus sets in the West around the same time Jupiter is rising in the East. The object next to the Moon was Jupiter. I've been watching it with my telescope.

let's say i was born in perth and went away for a while. i came back and maps written by mainstream agenda driven entities say it is sydney, all those who never lived there when it was perth know it as sydney because that's what the map says. i remember it being perth and can only remind people that it is perth. they can believe the map or someone who actually lived there. no big deal

It's the 15th brightest star in the night sky called 'Spica'. Our local observatory did a news story on it yesterday.

Pay attention to the dates in threads, folks.

This thread was started last year, when Jupiter was the planet in question.

Now the night sky is totally different.

I have been watching the object in question for over eighteen months now, at the moment it is 107 degrees East around 4am in the UK.

What I want to know is this, if it is Jupiter as some as stating it is, when will it no longer be visible in the sky - what sort of date we talking here. The same question for if it is Venus.

Secondly, the object is bloody massive now compared to what it was eighteen months ago and it was quite large then, that was when I first noticed it, its brightness got my attention - however, the size of it now is around four times as large as when I first saw it.

Anybody else noticed the same?

Re: Bright star next to moon right now?
... oh an another thing, apart from our own Sun, it is not possible to see planets or stars around noon when the sun is shining (cloudless sky of course) as far as I know is it?

Then could somebody enlighten me why, I was able to see it with the naked eye at approx 11am just over a week ago - granted I had to look very closely, but as I knew exactly where I was supposed to look, I could actually see the object in question.

Anybody have any theories?

It might be Betelgeuse. Does that help? Jupiter is to the right of the moon.

Duuuude:

The Original Post question was "Bright star next to the moon right now?"

As of AndyUK's answer on November 29, 2012 the bright object IS Jupiter!! Technically, the bright star nearest the moon right now is Aldebaran, just to the right of the moon as it rises.

But an astronomy geek knows that--and pays attention to calendars. ;=)
