Here are the facts, despite the media's best efforts to induce fear. All it takes is one bad CME my friend. It is unlikely, but the possibility is certainly there. I don't think there is any reason to worry about 2012/13 versus any other solar max though.. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1554034 The only way a CME will have the effect as the media portrays is if the magnetic field no longer shielded us from the sun's activities. The activity of the sun in the last maximum was extremely high and our minimum was extremely low and long lasting. I think people forget just how big the sun and these clouds of plasma it ejects are. An extremely powerful flare or any CME that causes geomagnetic storms will disrupt communications, especially the kind the US navy and military use. It seems like a scare tactic to get people to fund these kind of research projects in order to help the military so they don't have to spend their budgets on it. Coronal mass ejections are plasma, which are charged particles and are only affects by magnetic fields. The magnetosphere of the Earth shields us from most of this matter and energy. The ONLY way these scenarios the media want you to believe can only happen, is if the shield is gone. |

Or did you just shove your beliefs in here without even bothering. Oh and you show your lack of any real knowledge when you stated that the Carrington event was a CME. It wasn't. It was a flare. Just sick and tired of all the suntards crying doom every time the sun does what it normally should. You should be looking at what's causing the sun to behave in such an unpredicted and anomalous way recently instead of worrying about a possibility the sun may fry us IF our magnetic field is gone or disrupted somehow. |

The only evidence we have showing the negative effects of these flares are disruptions to communications. Burning telephone poles and blackouts to radio communications and power stations in certain regions is not a nuclear holocaust. The worst case scenario can only happen IF we didn't have the protection of the magnetosphere and IF a powerful CME happened to erupt and head in our direction. |

I'm not projecting doom. Those graphs were modelled 2 years ago!. If anything, nasa are contradicting themselves with every new report they give relating to the sun. But the carrington effect was real and can happen again. |

Here are the facts, despite the media's best efforts to induce fear. *sigh* No it's not. A CME can occur without a flare and a flare can occur without a CME. One of the difficulties in the present controversy is that flares and CMEs often occur together. However, one does not cause the other. Even when flares and CMEs do occur together, there is little relationship between their positions or timing and often there is more energy in the CME than in the associated flare [Kahler 1992]. Kahler [1982] coined the term "big flare syndrome" to point out that, despite appearances, not all processes occurring in conjunction with big flares are causally related to the flare or to each other, even when well correlated. Our greatest progress in establishing causal relationships has come from the observation of small impulsive flares without CMEs and from erupting-filament events which are CMEs without impulsive flares [Kahler 1992]. If you don't understand something, don't act like you do because people who do know can easily see how foolish you are. |

So what your saying is that as long as the Magnetosphere is protecting us everything will be fine. But what happens when a flare knocks out radio communications and power stations for longer then a week. Most Nuclear power plants run their coolant pumps with electricity, with no electricity they rely on batteries and/or generators which use diesel or propane. According to the article there are 104 power plants in the us. A carrington strength Flare could cause major problems. "Last month, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said U.S. plants affected by a blackout should be able to cope without electricity for at least eight hours and should have procedures to keep the reactor and spent-fuel pool cool for 72 hours.(this taken from article) What happens if they are without electricity for longer then 72 hours? If anything, nasa are contradicting themselves with every new report they give relating to the sun. But the carrington effect was real and can happen again. Are you a moron or something AC? Those graphs are plotting the sunspots figures for every month. Look at this year compared to the previous maximum in 2001-2003. We're still nowhere near the levels of activity we've previously had. Now we have threads like this Thread: The Doom IS The Sun! and so many others discussing things they know NOTHING about and crying doom over some activity on the sun. People don't even understand the simple difference between a flare and a CME. The sun-earth connection has been around, obviously ever since the sun and earth were born, I find it extremely hard to accept the sun will be the cause of our demise anytime soon. The only way the perfect storm from the sun can affect us if we're experiencing a magnetic pole reversal (and the ONLY known cause of such events are dense space clouds Thread: The only thing known to cause magnetic pole reversals on Earth: dense space clouds. ), which according to scientists is overdue, whilst a massive and extremely dense earth directed CME hits us. It would have to be a culmination of multiple events, which is unlikely but not impossible. Since the THEMIS mission we've found that the sun-earth connection is almost constant, with plasma from the sun streaming freely into our atmosphere. We have matter going out and matter coming in. As much as the matter and radiation from the sun can be harmful to life, it is also an integral part of life. Instead of focusing and panicking over little insignificant sun events people really should be focused on WHY and WHAT is causing Sol to behave so strangely this cycle. As I stated before, the cause can only be either internal or external. If it is external the only things in existence on such a scale to affect the sun and the magnetic field of the sun would be plasma/molecular clouds and the ISM (interstellar medium) which in essence are the same thing just with varying characteristics. These clouds are huge but are not affected by gravity and do not gravitationally affect anything because of the nature of the matter as a plasma. They also tend to be invisible due to the dust which can block, absorb and reflect visible light and other EM frequencies. There is also plenty of evidence showing the earth has encountered such clouds many times in the past with varying effects. We've been lucky so far as we've been in a relatively low density cloud cavity for thousands of years but we're now entering a more denser region, which is affecting the solar system and everything in it. As above, so below, interstellar "space weather" affects our solar system's "weather" which in turn affects the sun and planets. There's no need try to explain the current changes with archaic belief systems and regurgitated stories about mystical planets and comets because not only does it not reflect reality but it is also very insane and stupid. People are quick to believe explanations which they like about things they have little or no understanding of because they are lazy or stupid but if the explanation has no basis in reality/universe then it's nothing more than a delusion, a lie. Quoting: WizardMoz Solar activity has a 11 year cycle and longer ones superimposed on these. Nothing will happen. At least for now! Was earth ever more dependent on electronics, you know, for everything, than today? Seems like a lot of important things would shut down, if we got another solar superstorm. |
