From tomorrow, jobcentres in England and Wales will refer the needy to charity-run food banks that will give them a food parcel. It is the first time in living memory that hungry people will have been passed on to charities in this way. |

The total given emergency food boxes will rise from 61,000 in 2010 to an estimated 100,000 this year, according to the trust, which predicts that half a million Britons will need help by 2015. The latest available figures reveal that, in 2008-09 in England and Wales, almost 2.4 million people applied for crisis loans. Only 1.7 million received an initial award, meaning almost 700,000 were left waiting for a loan or had their applications turned down. |

I've been through lots of bad situations. Written quite a lot of letters of complaint, and done my fair share of shouting! If you did the 13 week period of IAP working in stores, supermarkets for £15 extra a week - you were also expected to work on a Saturday for free!! The store getting free-cheap labour, while you, the unemployed person are on the so-called IAP (Intensive Activity Period) - to recieve your £64 per week Unemployment Benefit. Luckily I didn't have to do that, but I saw some people who did, and they looked as miserable as sin! Although all thats changed now supposedly. Probably worse now. |

Under the scheme, people whose benefits have been delayed, or have been refused crisis loans, will be referred to their local food bank. A claimant will be limited to three consecutive referrals – each time giving them enough food for three days. They will be given basics such as tinned soup, baked beans, meat, fish and pasta." The part I find confusing is that the article implies that you need a government referral to go to a privately run food bank. |

Yes, you need to be referred by the dole office or some other agency that operates with an official stamp of approval. Across the desert lies the promised land - WW |

In Britain, it's always a case of 'I'm alright, Jack!'. The comfortable majority don't give a fuck about the unemployed, don't even know they exist. At the turn of the 20th century, about 1900, the average Brit had a life expectancy of 45. It seems today that Cameron the Cunt is trying to turn the clock back, is already forcing deprived people onto the streets, making life for them as hard as he feels these 'wasters' deserve. |

Not that there are many secular charities in the UK. To the people who'll scream "Socialism" at this, I'd rather pay slightly higher taxes and have this happen than have people stealing food all over the place. |

Quoting: jannerfish Same here in Australia. Our government no longer pays welfare recipients enough to survive, but are happy to print out a referral to get help from a privately funded charity. The 'Job Centres' here are also being given extra powers to cut off your payments, organise medical treatment if you claim you are too sick to work and send you off for 'work conditioning' (free labour force). However, it was demonstrated to our government many years ago that these privately owned job centres are all corrupt, rorting the system and since they get paid in advance of doing their job, don't bother to do it once they have the money in the bank. Most of the unemployed would actually prefer to have a real job, than to have to line up for referrals to a soup kitchen. Yet our government is currently indulging in a media campaign which brands every welfare recipient in this country 'a lazy bludger who has no intention to work', even if you happen to be dying of cancer in reality. |
