Electric Bills
Hi. I am just curious if this is happening elsewhere.

10 years ago, the highest bill for electricity I got was during the summer months (with the AC on) - $167.00 in August.

NOW - my monthly "budget" payment is a whopping $525.00 per month! This is - NOT DOABLE for me. This is more than 3/4 of my weekly take home pay! Plus of course, like everybody else that does NOT work for the government, or in banking, I haven't had a RAISE IN ALMOST 5 YEARS. I am lucky to have a job at all and I know this.

I'm in New Jersey "at the shore".

Anyone else? wtf

Re: Electric Bills
I can feel your pain, watching the electric, natural gas, phone rates go up yearly.

You have no choice except be connected to the power grid, even if you don't use it, you still billed a monthly charge. How is this even allowable, being FORCED to pay, thanks to our hundreds of levels of government.

If you don't pay you get disconnected, it's about your only option for the short term. You can bet you stay living in the same dwelling, some form of government WILL visit to see how you can survive without electric, there too you WILL be fined for something.

If I could afford, I would install solar panels on my roof, a battery bank in the basement, with power converters. But coming up with ten grand isn't in my future, so all I can do is cut everywhere possible.

You are not alone. I live in Virginia and my Summer bill for the month of August was 425.00 dollars!!! WTH!!! Now, Virginia is saying that we are paying below the AVERAGE of what we should be paying!!! They want to RAISE THE UTILITY BILLS BY 7% at MINIMUM. I can't keep paying this???? I think soon most Americans will be using Candlelight again??? Could you imagine you paid your house off and now you have another MORTGAGE PAYMENT? (the electric bills are starting to look like Mortgage payments) I feel you I know the pain.

I am unemployed. I paid around 100 a month average for my electric bill. I gave up on air conditioning this summer and now pay 25-30 dollars a month and plan to keep my thermostat at 60 this winter.

All of these appliances are gas in my house....and my gas bill on a budget is cheap - only $92.00 per month.

I am really DISTRESSED about this! Thanks for the Very Logical Suggestion though. I appreciate it. hf

BTW - I too am a "fiend" about shutting things off, and about unplugging as many power "vampires" that I can. Crap.

I have gas heat. And yeah, the AC is unfortunately on almost all the time. I have two kids at home. My house faces north, and I don't get Any Breezes. Or rarely. The other townhouses around me block most of the breezes. I installed ceiling fans and other stand-alone fans, which helps, but obviously not enough/very much. How would I know if someone is steeling electricity? Thank-you though. hf

Yeah, me too, also at "The Shore". Didn't use AC much this summer. I'm just paying 100 bucks per month and hoping they don't shut me off. NJR isn't far behind. Paying for energy is just another form of slavery.

A high quality BP 85 watt panel will cost aroung $400.00, and with a deep cycle battery and a small inverter can run a small frig...at least during the day.

Re: Electric Bills
Guys there is a massive shift happening right now. Utilities are being forced to get their power from renewables and normal coal power is taxed and fined at very high levels. This is done so that the cost of solar and wind will seem like a good deal and it will be used.

What sq ft are the houses on some of these costs? My house is 1700 sq ft, a/c always at 68 in the summer. That is 145-180 a month in MN. Winter is 180-240 with the stat at 70.

All of this comes down ro how much you pay per "kilowatt hour" and how many kilowatt hours you use. I think i am paying $.08 per KWH now.

Make sure you unplug any consumer electronics when not in use b/c they have large capacitors in them that store energy and are a constant drain om you bill.

Also for $10 you can get motion switches for your lighting which also helps. Most utilities for free will actually come to your home and do a free audit to show you how to save money if you dont mind some random person coming into your house.

Hell yeah the teenagers leave everything running.. no matter how often I go behind them and turn stuff off.

When they were gone for a month, my bill went from $265.00 down to $90.00.. no kidding.

When they came back, up over $250.00 again.

people better get ready, the bills you have now are going to look small when the epa gets done going after the coal fired electric plants. its all a part of the carbon tax the congress never passed, and our great and powerful POTUS bypassed them and had the epa just enforce it.

Every year the electric co. where I live, has increased their rates every January. It's sickening. I'm paying over $450 a month, during winter months. I never have my heat above 68 & I turn it down to 65 at night. I don't overuse electricity. It's total bullshit. Who can afford this?
