political correctness is a doctrine.... fostered by a delusional, illogical minority...... and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media; which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I'll just say I'm glad you weren't home when those thugs decided to break in. Things could have been a lot worse, remember that.

a good quality safe will slow them down. no way can the average citizen get into a quality safe in under 10 minutes. yes there are experts out there but the average citizen is no expert.

SO sorry about this! Especially the sentimental things- something similar happened to us when I was a teenager, the police said it was a crime ring who had metal detectors to find the silver and gold. Took all of my mom's family jewelry as well as all of the silver. The police said they likely melted it down before they left the neighborhood.

I'm glad they didn't hurt the pets :)

Oh, you may also want to think about installing a few hidden cameras with no visible wires and recording system. They are fairly cheap. Install at front and back doors, hallway, and living room, etc.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1029401

IP/net cams work best because they can be configured to FTP images off-site for safe secure storage AND email you a notification.

And you want the cameras visible in a location where the burglar will come face to face with it and pause in surprise for a moment, ha, really.

Re: Someone broke into our house this afternoon
Sorry this happened OP.

There have been a bunch of burglaries around here lately. My friend got robbed last week while she was out picking up the kids at school...My friend has a big dog - a lab that was useless. They broke in to the house by popping open a lock on a brand new window. Took a dog toy and threw it into the half bath...dog followed and they locked her in there. They took a laptop from the kitchen, jewelry from upstairs and the kid's piggy bank money (urgh).

When I was a teenager my house was robbed while we were in it. I was in my room and my parents in the living room. They climbed into my parent's bedroom and went through all their stuff...opened all my Mom's jewelry cases very neatly and stole...nothing. I think that made my Mom feel worse than anything!

They took guns, jewelry boxes with jewelry I have had for years and years, our laptop computers ( I am using my work computer right now) ---they broke the back door and we have an alarm system; they were able to take a lot in 10 minutes as that is how long the police took to get here.

Re: Someone broke into our house this afternoon
Things are getting really bad (and a little scary) out there.

At my work, we've had 4 worker's vehicles in the past week (on different days) had their catalytic converters stolen off of them. A gf that is in my unit, her car was one of the ones that was hit. Guess it's fairly easy and the mechanic said there are selling them on the street for $100-$150 a piece. If they hit 10 cars a day, that's an easy $1000!

Her insurance didn't cover because of her $500 deductible, with parts and labor cost her $413 (that none of us having laying around). We're all waiting to see which one of our cars is next.

And the kicker....it's a guarded lot! 3 different guards on duty when all 4 have happened so far. Just out of camera range too, go figure

Re: Someone broke into our house this afternoon
Sorry to hear this Angel. Our home was broken into a few years ago and even to this day I find out things are missing that I don't use often. It's an awful feeling for sure. Were all your cupboards and drawers open as well, that really creeped me out knowing they were into everything including our underwear drawers.

We ended up getting good blinds for every window and a security system finally and a dog. There have been more break ins, but not our place any more, thankfully.

Here is a suggestion, buy a house in an area that you know has a high per capita drug cartels - not dealers, but big movers... they don't put up with that shit, and those areas are crime free... go figure...

Also, get a good security camera...you can get one set up for the front of the house, the rear, and the interior for a reasonable price. Most security companies can set you up with one..make sure it's got good resolution.

Yes, insurance will cover it but I can't replace the sentimental items ...things my husband has given me for years that are now gone. I can't get back the feeling of being safe in my own home either. I lost a home in a tornado two years ago.

My pets were alive and well thank goodness.
