Someone broke into our house this afternoon

and all a thief has to do is get into the house and all your guns and ammo are his instantly, merely hidden in the closet.

You need double cylinder dead bolts on all outside doors.
Putting them on inside door might be a good idea too.
Thief can get in windows, but cannot get out the doors.

We have burglers in our neighborhood, so we never leave the house untended.

One of the installation guys for my internet/phone/tv stole some silver dollars that I unwisely left where I always had them. That was a while ago; I still get the feeling that I would like to kill him.

Repairmen are always suspect of casing the place.
Strangers that you kid's friends bring around can be thieves too. Stole some jewelry that was in my bathroom.

This is EXCELLENT advise.

For five years, I lived in a neighborhood where break-ins were just part of the landscape. So many of my neighbors had their stuff stolen, but we all learned that THIEVES are lazy and just go to the closest pawn shop to unload their wares.

I am so sorry for your misfortune. Yes, it is a very violating experience. I have unfortunately been through the same thing. I had a LOT of gold stolen in the break in. The creepiest thing is knowing that someone has been in my private space.

I am again sorry, and I hope they catch the people responsible and that you are able to bring full charges against them. I also hope you are able to get some of your stuff back.

Take a day to check the pawn shops, as well as anywhere that buys jewelry. It is a small chance, but you never know.

Should try and make an inventory of the things that were stolen.

Keep an eye on traders sites , eBay etc Craigslist ... you'd be surprised what turns up. Also sometimes the thief is stupid enough to list items as a lot. Also you said jewellery was taken. If you can identify it, it will be easier to spot.

It’s surprising how fast the thieves can get in and out, especially when they know where everything is, because they cased the place.

The same thing happened to one of my uncles, and because they knew where everything was, I figure it had to have been either people who had come into his house to do some work, or friends of his kids.

I’ve never trust any strangers coming into my house, and when it’s absolutely necessary, I keep them confined to their work, and never leave them alone.

Here’s another horror story for you. This woman I know who pokes her nose into everyone else’s business, told a friend that they needed to buy a safe, and put all kinds of cash and valuables in it, because the banks couldn’t be trusted. So they had a safe installed, and two weeks later someone broke into their house and emptied the safe. It obviously had something to do with the people who installed the safe. If you’re stupid enough to stockpile cash, gold, silver, jewelry, etc., at least be smart enough to bury it in a tin can, and don’t tell a soul. The problem with all that crap is, the second you start showing up places to spend it, someone will either kill you on the spot, or follow you home and kill you for it. It’s all worthless in the end. Skills have value, everything else is crap.

You sound like you have perservered through a lot! Your heart will truly be rewarded through love from the things that matter in life! How inspiring. good advice, and you can put searcch limits for certain items, say a piece of jewelry being listed by a seller within 100 miles of your house. Such a feeling of violation.
What state do you live in?

i know the feeling. it definitely feels like you've been violated beyond belief. that really sucks that all that happened to you. 10 minutes is really not a lot of time to look around... must have been more than one person.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this OP. To lose things that are so important to you and those you love must really hurt. To work so hard for these things and have someone clean you out in just a few minutes is beyond awful! I am equally glad though that you and your loved ones did not get hurt in the process. Well that's sad to hear, but that should buy them a nice meth binge.
And give all your hard earned stuff to illegal drug dealers.
When of course if it was legal it would cost 20 cents and you'd still have your stuff, and not feel violated.
But don't bother telling this to the corrupt politicians who have shares in prisons and private security.

I am so sorry to hear this. It's wrong on so many levels, but the feeling of being violated is probably the worst part.

I feel sorry for you, but you shouldn't feel unsafe in your home, if you are home and have your guns then you are safe.

You have too much attachment to material things. The reason those gifts from your husband mattered so much was because of the heart and thought and love behind the gifting itself.

Remember (as you still do) those feelings, and allow the material items to fall by the wayside.

This happened to someone I know also. She had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of family Jewelry that she was going to pass on to her daughters. Things that she could have sold but held onto for sentimental reasons. It totally changed her. She now couldn't give two tosses for that sort of thing. Easy come, easy go. It's not just jewelry, it's a link to the past.

That's a pipe dream. There are plenty of things that are legal, none of them cost 20 cents.

If drugs were legal, those who produce drugs would continue to want a good price for them, and all the dealers would sooner fall into a natural price fixing collusion before falling into an intense competition to lower prices.

Think of the excess we have in all other areas and you will see, prices don't go down, down, down, they remain the same, artificially priced.

Hey angel, I see some giving you a bad time about guns taken, well it happened to us too in our break in, a couple of rifles. Since that lesson was learned we went to Walmart and bought a gun case, it was only 200.00 on sale.

I'm not sure why some people seem to enjoy kicking people when they're down rather then being helpful. I'll never understand that.
