He was a great comedian who had a philosophical bent (as do many of the true geniuses in most fields), but if judged as a philosopher, he'd barely rate above most philosophy undergrads. He makes no philosophical observations that are the least bit revelatory to philosophers (or even sociologists). He's literally thousands of years late to the party. He would have admitted to all this. He was a genius comedian, and he probably could have been a decent Philosopher of Sociology if he had devoted his life to it. But he didn't. Meanwhile, thousands and thousands of people who are even smarter than him actually did devote their lives to philosophy. Carlin can't even compete with that crowd, just like they can't compete with him on a comedy stage. |
