Cleft may cause problems with feeding, ear disease, speech and socialization.
Due to lack of suction, an infant with a cleft may have trouble feeding. An infant with a cleft palate will have greater success feeding in a more upright position. Gravity will help prevent milk from coming through the baby's nose if he/she has cleft palate. Gravity feeding can be accomplished by using specialized equipment, such as the Haberman Feeder, or by using a combination of nipples and bottle inserts like the one shown, is commonly used with other infants. A large hole, crosscut, or slit in the nipple, a protruding nipple and rhythmically squeezing the bottle insert can result in controllable flow to the infant without the stigma caused by specialized equipment.
Individuals with cleft also face many middle ear infections which can eventually lead to total hearing loss. The Eustachian tubes and external ear canals may be angled or tortuous, leading to food or other contamination of a part of the body that is normally self cleaning. Hearing is related to learning to speak. Babies with palatal clefts may have compromised hearing and therefore, if the baby cannot hear, it cannot try to mimic the sounds of speech. Thus, even before expressive language acquisition, the baby with the cleft palate is at risk for receptive language acquisition. Because the lips and palate are both used in pronunciation, individuals with cleft usually need the aid of a speech therapist.

You nasty person. Can you not just take pleasure in the simple joy of a child. The work these surgeons are doing is wonderful and stands alone for what it is regardless of potential future outcomes. For all you know this simple procedure may give that child the confidence to become someone great. And even if that is not the case she can now take pleasure in being a child.

Nice post...My wife went to Brazil for a week last summer to watch these surgeries for school. For our wedding this year we donated money to the "Smile Train" instead of handing out useless gifts to our guests. You should see some of the other children that have far worse cases than this. Cleft lip is one thing, but a lot of these children that are having problems have Cleft Pallet. Thanks for posting this

I never had any real problems with my hearing to be honest, though had severe difficutly in being understood when I was younger, always had runny noses, colds.. yeah.. lol.. mash potato coming outta my nose.. but crisps were the worst! getting stuck up in that big palate hole. Us hare-lip sufferers can experience pain, numbness, delayed pain.. from say drinking something very hot. Drinking & eating was generally ok, except food would come out my nose at times. After an operation, I'd maybe not eat 'any' solid food for weeks! just rely on a drip or liquid food/milk shakes, soups.. eventually.. moving onto porridge, beans, soaked weetabix. When I had my tougne removed & transferred in a tougne flat operation to make up my palate.. I'd no tougne for several weeks.. till it grew back! A new tougne! cool. It took decades for my palate to close, wouldn't close.. till I had some bone-graph operations, where bone was taken from my hip a few times. It was not easy, very! painful.

Every effort should be make to make sure that no child has to go the through what I went through, both in medical treatment.. & esp: most peoples nasty reactions/violence. ALL 'hare-lip/cleft' operations should be 'free' worldwide automatically, as a basic human right.

I saw a news item last night or the night before on our UK news about Sudanese Saimese twins joined at the head, who were successfully seperated at Great Ormond Street Hospital. It's just amazing what can be done these days..

I hope we see this girl again in years to come.. hopefully a successful singer or actress or whatever she wants to be.. I wish her the best of luck!

Actually.. I'm 'amazed' at the lack of swelling on that girl's face.. I really am! I'd be swollen like a football.

love to be able to do that for someone,i know a lot of people put the medical profession down,but i have worked in operating theaters before for years,and those surgeons need to be praised,they operate for hours on end,so they so they can save someones life.

I'm not sure if it's just the doctors.... I think it has a lot to do with how we ALL feel but somehow gets lost in the translation of life. We all have deficits,seen and unseen. Everyone of us has looked in the mirror and seen flaws.
Yet, this child was healed..This child inspires all of us to move past what hinders and embrace whats given. Life is a blessing, grasp those that offer kindness, respond by paying it forward. God Bless
