Come on, talk it's OK, On-star isn't on the computer's (yet) More @ this link also: [link to news.consumerreports.org] Snip; GM's telematic service, OnStar, has been sending notices to subscribers of pending changes—effective December—to its privacy statement. But the proposed modifications and clarifications have already started a stir among some users and privacy advocates. UPDATE Sept. 22, 2011: OnStar has e-mailed an official response regarding its new terms and conditions of service, maintaining “OnStar has and always will give our customers the choice in how we use their data. We’ve also been very open with our customers about changes in services and privacy terms.” A video posted on YouTube by OnStar features Joanne Finnorn, vice president of subscriber services at OnStar, explaining the changes to the company's terms and conditions of service. Among the three major changes—which include further clarification of the types of subscriber data that is collected and how it is safeguarded—are two that detail how and when the data are collected, as well as what OnStar may do with that information. Specifically, the new subscriber privacy policy says: “ Unless the Data Connection in your Vehicle is deactivated, information about your Vehicle may continue to be collected even if you do not have a Plan. ” Last Edited by dogmeat2112 on 09/22/2011 10:13 AM |

Specifically, the new subscriber privacy policy says: “ Unless the Data Connection in your Vehicle is deactivated, information about your Vehicle may continue to be collected even if you do not have a Plan. ” So pull the plug! I've got a 2006 Chrysler, and I've noticed sounds like radio interference, and something like talking even though I cannot make out the words, coming from the car speakers even I don't have the radio on. This is since I replaced the factory radio (which has specific bandwidth suppression tuned to the car) and speakers with a better aftermarket radio and speakers. I also get alternator hum now at about 3 kHz even though I've tried to filter it to ground, but this isn't that. I don't think my car by itself is such a great antenna that I am picking up that much signal without even needing to amplify it. So I suspect some funny business in the car's electronics, but I don't know where it is and what to unplug. |

Not so fast, onstar is so intertwined with the new cars it's just not so easy to disable as pulling the plug I'm afraid. |

FatalW1shes User ID: 1357677 United States 09/22/2011 10:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bump. I'm glad I decided to buy an older Dodge than a New GM. I knew they were going to use ONSTAR to spy on people. Everybody thought I was being paranoid. OnStar says that it has the right to collect and sell personal, yet supposedly anonymous information on your vehicle, including speed, location, seat belt usage and other information. I bet they collect a LOT more than that just that. |
FatalW1shes User ID: 1357677 United States 09/22/2011 11:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Talked to a friend at a GM Dealership and he said this... A few techs for Chevy tell me that in the next yr or so the bigwigs at GM will start looking for ways to void warrantys by seeing your car run quarter mile passes, excess speeds etc... So GM is going to use this to void your warranty as well.. Anybody that buys a GM vehicle now is a damn fool. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1482432 United States 09/22/2011 11:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For the older OnStar equiped GM vehicles there are a couple of YouTube videos on how to disable it (versus removing it) by finding the control box and unplugging certain cables. If interested do a YouTube search. I am not sure that is going to work with the newer versions of it though since it is now so tightly integrated into the vehicle control electronics package/software. |
