Should Certain Dog Breeds Be Banned If The Species Is Too Dangerous?
Several breeds, including Rottweilers, and in a famous San Francisco case, the Presa Canario, have fatally attacked humans. It is the pit bull, however, that is responsible for the majority of attacks on humans and is most often the target of legislative bans.

Really, would a well-cared and well-fed dog really NEED to go an attack humans?

This will sound funny, but I think the dog's temper has a lot to do with it.

Some breeds are pretty loose cannons.

They will bite if they want to.

The "two-legged asshole" is the breed that's most dangerous and out of control. I bred Rottweilers for nearly 20 yrs. and no probelms.

Point taken.

But pit bulls are a different caliber, don't you think?

They switch modes like no other dog.

I have met 1 "pit" that was totally out of control (bet the owner was at fault). Where I now live there are many "pit" mixes and no problems. Dogs "mirror" what they see and the way they are treated (mistreated).

If we used that logic then humans should be banned.

Cities and towns should be able to make such laws. I also think store owners should have the right to kick out customers they don't want, landlords should be able to rent to who they want, local schools should be able to kick kids out, and towns should be able to ban individuals from entering. Individuals and local governments used to be able to make such decisions. Now the perps seem to have all the rights and the victims none.

For that reason i think a 110lb woman handling a 145lb dog is probably a bad idea.

I have a friend who has a large black lab. It's a very sweet dog, but when it decides it wants to check something out, both he and my friend check it out! LOL! I told her to get one of those choke collars that put the metal bars into his neck if he pulls too hard - she thought that was cruel. I use one on my hunting dog when I walk him (he's 75 lbs but very strong). It makes a huge difference and we can both enjoy our walks.

Look, it really is how it's raised. You start with it as a pup, correct it's behavior, POSITIVELY and I guarantee you'd have no problems. Even the dog whisperer loves pits... that guy can take the most viscous of breeds and have it acting like a puppy, what does that tell you? ENVIRONMENT is the driving factor behind the dogs behavior.

Pitbulls are actually 3 different breeds of dogs that improperly get lumped into the same catagory. American bulldog, pitbull terrier and staffordshire terrier. The key word in two of those dogs is " TERRIER". Terriers require lots to do or they become bored and become destructive. You have to provide them with lots of play things and activities to wear them out and they become docile as all get out. I know, I have one full blood and one mixed with a cattle dog. They are busy bodies. and in the 4 years I've had them both... not one iota of aggression not towards me, not towards my kids and not towards strangers (unless you're in an area where you are not invited... but you kind of want that in a dog, no?)

Indi, my bluenose, actually acted as a project dog for girl scouts last year. The girls in my daughters troop helped train her and took her to the senior homes around for touch therapy... they got their bronze awards for that.

Can I ask you why you think a Neapolitan Mastiff should be on a banned list? Yeah it's big, but it's docile. The only thing in danger is it's crotch...

So if statisical analysis has you most likely getting your car stolen by a young black man, does that mean its because he's black? Should we therefore restrict and control the freedom of these young black men so they cannot steal of your car stereo?

No, it's fucking ludicrous. We have an 11 year old pit bull and black friends. Because statistics aren't reality. Because its the upbringing/environment of the dog and the human being that determines the kind of choices made by both. Passing laws such as breed specific legislation, is an end run around the kind of evolution in human society that we so desperatly need.

Family: Pit bull saved boy, 9, from abduction

Fort Collins - A family's pit bull saved a 9-year-old from being abducted from his backyard, and police searched Tuesday for the suspect.

"Destiny" came to the aid of the boy Monday night as a stranger allegedly was pulling him over the fence. The dog charged the assailant, who let go of the child and fled, according to the family.

"I got her to protect my kids," Wayne Myers, the boy's father, said of his 2-year-old dog. "I love pit bulls to death."

Myers said he became aware that something was wrong while working on a car in his driveway in the 3000 block of West Laporte Avenue about 7:20 p.m.

"Destiny started barking, and it wasn't playful," Myers said.

Atleast ban them from city sidewalks and parks. If someone wants the risk in there own home that is one thing, but don't endanger others.
Worst is the "pitbull kid" creeps that hang out on street corners. Strong arm intimidation with a deadly weapon, and they are allowed to get away with it.

Lol no.

I live in the Netherlands, and I think it was last year, there was a court case about this, and it was about pitbulls.

The court then stated that banning a certain species would be discrimination, case closed.

The reason they gave was that a dog is only as dangerous as the owner makes it.

Its a difficult question. As far as i am aware, 9 times out of 10 its the owners who mistreat their dogs from an early age they thrn become viscious. If a dog bites someone it should be put down, but only if it bit for no reason. If the dog was trying to defend someone then no.

Pit Bulls are not the best breed but it's irresponsible breeding and STUPID owners that are the problem. That goes for any breed.

All dogs should be banned because inconsiderate fucking dog owners let them bark all day and night and shit all over the place and invade people's personal space.

You do not have a right to own 5 fucking worthless noisy animals.

It's another ugly American habit that needs to stop.

Exactly !!! Bull Terriers were originally family dogs, and even the U.S. Military used them during WW1. My Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Sheba, is a very meek, mild mannered dog, who does nothing but eat, sleep, and play. She constantly kisses everyone, even our Abyssinian cat, Thomas. They even sleep together. A dog is what you make it out to be. Raise them with love, and as a member of the family, and there will be no problems. The breed doesn't matter, it is how you raise them.

Re: Should Certain Dog Breeds Be Banned If The Species Is Too Dangerous?
Iseems to me very unfair that people brand certain dogs as 'dangerous'. These dogs spend less that 1% of their lives mauling children and babies, and yet they are branded as dangerous.

99% of the time they are not savaging anyone. If your car worked 99% of the time you would not call it 'unreliable'.

Maybe it's just because I've never been scared of dangerous animals...

Saying that - I was once bitten on the arse by a German Shepherd, but he apologised afterwards and even introduced me to his dog...
