Don't know why, though. Reagan and his administration trashed ALL the environmental/green progress that had been made in the previous administration.

He threw the environment and our best welfare and future over for weapons.

The 80's were the peak of feel good propaganda.

Ronald Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in U.S. history.

He quadrupled the payroll tax while dropping the income tax 1% for middle class creating a net gain of 8% increase in taxes for the middle class. Then he lowered income taxes for the rich by 7%. He basically transferred the tax load to the middle class but since "income" taxes went down 1% he ended up fooling them into thinking he gave them a tax cut.

He then went on a deficit spending spree that has continued until this day.

The military spending, while excessive, made people proud of their country again (in the 70s the cold war was stagnating and you could argue Soviet Union was winning).

Then there was all that reganomics that tamed inflation and made it possible for people to become yuppies and share the wealth.
