I did this in the USA when I lived there. I built my home, very similar for $8,000. BUT. I soon found I could not get home or contents insurance as I did not meet some codes. I then got fined for not getting full compliance to codes. I was fined $25,000 for refusing to get power hooked up, and another $10,000 fine for not using the city sewerage. I was then fined $50,000 in environmental damages due to my septic tank/compost heap. I was fined $20,000 for using solar cells without getting city permission. I was then fined $15,000 for collecting rainwater. THEN I was fined $35,000 for farming my own food. Things just didn't work out for me in the land of the free.

I would love to read your story, if you were prepared or had the time to tell it.

I am interested greatly in this style of construction and I already have a location planned.

Although it will be in Australia, I am sure your story would highlight some things I would need/could look out for.

So please, do tell.

where did you build this? in the middle of town? i dont see how they could intervene like that if you were outside city limits. however if your shitting in a leaf pile next to town hall then i would probably take offense myself.

Hoping someone, in this case a complete moron who unnecessarily brings topics of death and rape into a thread about building a cheap bloody house, and stating that "it could happen to you" sounds like someone that would benefit the world by leaving it.

Dont play with words. Perhaps saying "I hope you die" was a little extreme, however it was merely meant to reinforce the disgust at this individual.

Racist much? Geezus man, take a bloody chill pill. You are obviously over reacting waaaay too much.

FYI if you knew Australian speak, what he says really isnt offensive at all. Maybe in American speak it translates to something like "What a dive, who would live in such a mess? Maybe stinky hippies high on weed! :-)".

So get a hold of yourself child, and take your agression somewhere else. Bloody hell...this thread is turning to shit... Such a shame.

That's why we can't have nice things.

It's also why any positive threads on GLP like this one are trolled and shilled to extinction. Definitely a shame.

Yeah, I saw that about a year ago and would love to build one in our woods. We run Forest schools for children in our woods as well as running a Montessori school and think it would be great for kids to use when in woods, and myself of course!! There are pictures of more here and there is a little community of them in woods in Wales. They are the only kind of house you could get permission to build in woodland here in UK. I really hope to get permission to do it some time soon! Lots of useful information here. The bottom house is made of old tyres and hay! Saw it being made on T.v.

Really wonderful. But here in the US you wouldn't be able to get insurance or electricity. But who needs it in a house like this ?

Great Idea!
Good job!
But more for show in my opinion.

Will this house sustain itself after 1st good rain coming down from that hill ? A boulder? 2 feet of snow?

in 5- 10 years it will collapse leaving $5000 wound on the face of "gaia".

How about camp trailer for $3500?

I can take you to live in cave for 1 dollar! Lets make it big news!

If the wood was solid and if there is no earth to wood contact, then from the images the structural members are stronger than they need to be.

Reciprocal roof systems like that are super strong, stronger than a conventional strut-work roof that is weakened at each connection point.

The only 'weak' point may be at ground level where the tree trunks meet the foundation. Unless he coated the bottoms of the buried 'posts' in something like paint on bed liner, sealing it completely from soil and moisture, then in about 25 to 50 years (depending on the local termite potential) his house will collapse. If the trunks are isolated from soil and moisture they could stand for on I don't know, well over a century with minor regular maintenance to the structure.

It appears he used a thick mil plastic to isolate the straw bales from the ground, he most likely used the same to isolate the trunks from the ground as well.

And organic, curve is more likely to hold up over a milled straight bit of lumber, thus the very structure has great strength, especially over the windows and doors (openings) where he relied on arches.
