The Australian Child Support Agency annualised (multiplied by 12 for those who need this explaining) my annual salary, and then started taking a massive amount of money from my pay each fortnight. I was left destitute and had to use my credit card to stay alive. That is why the credit card got over limit and I couldn't be a paid member for several months. I had to go to the Commonwealth Ombudsman to get them to correct it. They had 'corrected' it once before when I complained, but they didn't do it properly, only adjusted for one of my children, not all. It eventually got adjusted to the standard amount but it is still tough. My ex claimed 100% care of our children when they went to live with him because I got a job interstate. I barely survive payday to payday and don't see my children as much as I'd like because I cannot afford the airfares to fly back home to spend time with them. Sucks to be me, but the kids are growing up and getting their own jobs now and we have managed to keep a close relationship despite all of that. I don't tell them about the child support money problems because I don't want them to feel guilty and drop out of school. Getting a good education is important to me, and I want them all to graduate. One thing I have learned, I know how to survive!

Same thing happened to me.Me and daughters dad were estranged and he remarried.For years we thought he never cared about her.Never got child support etc..Found out years later when I located him he had sent it to the state regularly all that time.My case was closed by then and she was an adult.I ask for records but could never get them..So someone got it.
Have to wonder how much is paid that the kids never know about especially if the mom and dad have no contact at all.

Never heard of such an absurd position to be in. The best one to be in is shared custody and no $$$ exchanged between parents...

Therefore, which spouse in your opinion gets to skate on their financial responsibility to their children and why do you rejoice in the shirking of ones responsibility to a child the slacker brought into this world. How the hell is this considered to be shared responsibility if one spouse provides nothing but blathers meaningless verbal wind then scurries off like a rodent giving nothing else to their offspring.

I just started paying $375 a month in child support, even though the mother and I are still together, just not married. I'm forced to pay support, even though I've been taking care of our daughter since she was born. We were both surprised that we had to go to a child support hearing, as she never filed for support. We did file for welfare so we could cover our daughter with the needed health care required as she is ineligible for health insurance at her job and my insurance costs $375 a month at my job, which is very unaffordable with having a car note, insurance, rent, food and utility bills on a monthly basis.

Apparently since we weren't listed as living together before the child support order went in, the state went after me for support. This wouldn't be too bad, as the mother returns the money to me so I can afford a place to live. What is total, utter bullshit is it costs me $120 to ensure my daughter has enough formula, diapers and personal effects to last her a whole month. Why the government feels I have to pay $375 a month (plus have their share of that for themselves of course) is beyond me.

We tried to fight it in the child support hearing but were told there was nothing we could do and since we didn't inform whoever the hell we are supposed to inform that we are living together, the support order had to go through (even though she didn't process anything through on her PC yet, considering we just gave her our pay stub information). Now we are going to try to appeal to the court and see if we can have it cancelled or at least lowered. We don't like it that the state forces this on parents who are equally raising their children just so they can take even more from us.
