In scientific terms, it simply means the sun is doing what is has been doing for roughly 4,500,000,000 years. Admittedly, it sounds really amazing (and it is!), but there's no real need to worry in the slightest about how any of this affects you. I know Layman, and he happens to be a pretty bright fellow. The ignorant man is the one who believes that the sun has been doing this for only 4.5 billion years and it can cause no harm. Prove me wrong? Just google gamma radiation. Ok, just did. Not sure why? And when are we going to get back to you proving to me that the sun has caused any real devastation outside of some Jersey assholes dying of sun poisoning from laying on a beach 80 hours out of the week? Life is pretty self-explanatory until you're taught a language that will be used to confuse the shit out of you for the rest of it. |

Fact is we don't know. As you pointed out, the sun has been around for a very long time. Our known history isn't much more than a fraction of a fraction in geological time. We do know that the sun's radiation can be deadly without protection and that is the current dilemma. Our magnetic shield is in a weakened state and the sun is growing angry. What does that mean? Who knows. I, for one, see protective shields down and increased solar activity as somewhat concerning. It is better to be aware of the possibilities than to be ignorant of what is possible. |

Do you think if you were standing next to a professor of astronomy at ANY college, you would dare repeat the above quoted text? I have had that very conversation with more than one professor. Solar physics is a very young science. Galileo Galile was the first to study the sun from a true scientific perspective. That was in 1611. Since that time, we have made many discoveries and put forth numerous theories. It remains obvious to most that our 400 years of acquired knowledge is not even a drop in the bucket. |

Admittedly, it sounds really amazing (and it is!), but there's no real need to worry in the slightest about how any of this affects you. Yes. The NOAA issued a "SEVERE" warning for no reason at all. I realize the sun goes through these stages, but this activity was not expected. It was expected to gradually get more intense until the peak of the cycle in 2013. Something has happened to trigger an abrupt change into activity. Solar flares do affect the earth in many ways.... especially direct impacts, which is the true fear, from the (and I'm quoting NASA) "Behemoth sunspot" that is "big and bad and turning our way". Kp7+ is rare even in active cycles. Two more notches and we would have world-wide power outages. Do some research. Saying something is normal for the past 4,500,000,000 years is kind of ridiculous in proving your point. Do you know what else is normal? Mass extinction events. Massive earthquakes, volcanoes, ice ages, stone ages, etc... Nice post. I agree with all of it. Problem is this particular 'event' is absolutely nothing to worry about. At all. Whatsoever. Cheers! Let's hope the behemoth dries up. |
