In Melancholia, 678 has a clearly disturbing meaning to the person that hears it at a disastrous wedding
I guess the bride's step Mom in the movie was playing a big role in the running of the wedding and at the end of the celebrations she hears in private from the party planner that the number of beans in the bottle guessing game was 678.

She stumbles on her words, and says incredible and the party planner agrees. She then tells them to forget about the results and to forget about it and throw out the prize.

Clearly being such a heavily symbolic movie, this was nothing different than the rest of the weird stuff.

Anyone have an explanation for 678?

Well later on, Kristen Dunst's character guessed it, to show that she knows things. Like the planet slamming into earth.

Considering the strange things going on with our weather and the storm that wasnt that I experienced tonight, this movie was just a little unnerving. Maybe since it is in sequence, it just means connect the dots.

678 = 2 * 3 *113 = 1st prime * 2nd * 30th

-> Sum of ranks = 33
-> Sum of (factors + ranks) = 151 = 36th prime

36th triangular number = 666

Each number can be decomposed in a unique way in its prime factors
-> 678 = 2 * 3 *113
So I say Sum of Factors(678)=2+3+113=118

Each factor have a rank in the prime list (google "prime numbers list')
2=1st prime number
3=2nd prime number
113=30rd prime number
So I say Sum of Factors Ranks(678)=1+2+30=33

I just summed SF & SFR = 119+33=151
It happens 151 is a prime number, the 36rd

What's fun with 36 is :
1+2+3+...+34+35+36=666 (which is the triangular sum of 36)
google 'triangular number'

Re: In Melancholia, 678 has a clearly disturbing meaning to the person that hears it at a disastrous wedding
You have to be a little bit (or maybe more) intuitive to understand the meaning of this film. Some might call it symbolism or metaphor but I believe that Justine is manifesting the state of her own existence. The planet melancholia is merely the sum of what she has chosen to manifest by believing and creating an emotional downward spiral. Her thoughts have driven her feelings and her feelings have manifested her reality. Once in the middle of this storm the cycle of though, emotion, and belief begin to self perpetuate which is what grows the intensity of the film right up to the end.

It's like one big lucid dream and everything within the dream is some part of Justine herself. The depression drives anxiety (Claire) but part of her wants to believe that her existence has some "real" scientific meaning (John). There is an innocence that she longs for (Leo) but she has gone too far down the proverbial path to find her way back. There is a feeling that she knows all because she does - she's creating it herself. All of these characters and the environment can be liberated to arrive at one state of melancholic existence and that is how you leave the film.

The filmmaker told you what he was going to give you in the title and then he delivered. And now most of the viewers that have reached this state are frustrated and angry at its development, hence, the "evil" that exists in the world and why there is no other choice but to end such a state of manifested existence. Though much of the feelings are projected onto the movie and the filmmaker rather than the viewer owning what is truly inside. The movie magic is equally as much about the fictitious dreamer as it is driving the emotions of the voyeur who is watching.

Be careful what you wish for.... You just might get it.

Agree - excellent summary. I watched it and didn't get that. Although I liked it, it was very odd - like Justine! I was also confused by the bean thing, but yeah - Justine knew that's why we were even told about it. I can't believe I didn't get that it was all in Justine's head!! Duh.

By the way - it's on Netflix now if you have it. It wasn't before.
