If you were to see me at a star party or one of the public viewings I volunteer at, you'd see that I am the "real deal." At least as far as amateur astronomy goes I am anyway, not quite sure what you meant by that. If you meant professional astronomer, no, I don't desire to be that.
 Quoting: Astromut

Star parties, public viewings, and the website that has your work on it that you decided not to link while linking your halfass youtube videos. All I'm saying is that you may can tell us what won't hit us, but you will never be the one to tell us when one will hit us.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1504077

my apologies, that was your work. I could observe deep space as well, if I had your equipment.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1504077

You could... but would you even know what to do with my equipment if you had it? And if you did operate it properly and spot a moving object in space, would you know how to identify it and calculate the orbit if it was unidentifiable?

As an example, consider these images of an object I followed as it streaked through space.

The timing of each image is as follows:

7:12:45.632
7:13:45.359
7:14:15.322
7:15:40.707

7:26:08.535
7:26:38.432
7:31:16.043
7:34:19.693
That's PM eastern time. The images were recorded November 19th, 2010. For simplicity and security sake, we'll say these were the observer coordinates:
27d 58' 15" N, 82d 27' 6.72" W
(Not my true coordinates, but close enough for a rough orbital calculation).

Using just the information above it is possible to calculate the orbit and identify the object in question. It takes skill to do it though, I'd be seriously impressed if you could properly derive the orbit. Even if you have the best equipment in the world, the equipment is only as good as the person using it. The data is worthless if you don't know how to use it.
 Quoting: Astromut

Sorry Mut, but I could do that calc in Stellarium and I am just a newbie backyard astronomer. I can set the location, time and coordinates and if it is in the database, I could id it.

The question is whether or not you could calculate the orbit independently using just the data given above. Dumping every known satellite into Stellarium and just ID'ing it that way is not the same as actually doing the calculations to determine its orbit using that data. Just for the sake of argument say it's not in the database (indeed using current TLE's to try to identify a satellite observation from almost a year ago would probably be somewhat tricky, though given Molniya's average orbital altitude, maybe you could get lucky), how would you determine the orbit using that data?

How is it possible that NASA only discovered this asteroid on September 18th? I am starting to feel that "not so safe" feeling.
 Quoting: BorisTheSpider

For an asteroid of this size, that's quite typical. Larger asteroids are discovered farther out, but the sub-100 meter asteroids can sneak up on us leaving only days until close approach.
 Quoting: Astromut

According to the mindset of doomtards and conspiracy nuts, they can say: "That's obviously cover-up done by TPTB! NASA has the most advanced equipment so they must know the asteroids weeks or even months or years before! People live on their normal life and workdays blinded from truth. When they notice it, it's already too late and panicking would be useless. TPTB's job is to prevent panic outbreak in the public, to maintain the order of THEIR society and so the elites are always being notified first!"
To this point, I'm almost speechless and the only thing I can say is "You are stupid!!" and they still think they're more rational than me!

Please can someone answer why this satellite was only used 5 days before falling back down and appears to be launched by Opto-Matic?

So can I just go out in my backyard and launch something and to hell with what happens to it?
 Quoting: Miggy

What the heck are you talking about? If you're talking about the time span of observations, that simply means they've only been observing it for 5 days, it doesn't mean it "fell down." As for "Otto matic," it's their way of saying the orbit was automatically determined from the astrometric data by the computer. Lots of objects on JPL are determined "otto matically." Even Elenin.
 Quoting: Astromut

Astromut, I think you and another poster were busy fighting when I posted this.

I was joking about launching something out of my backyard.

Here is what I posted and I respect your knowledge. I hope you can answer these questions from me.

Thanks, Miggy

Please forgive me if this has already answered. I've got 9 pages of reading to do.

But when I looked at the chart on the first page I was FUMING about some things that stood out about this thing.

If anyone would be kind enough to address them I'd be much happier than I am as I type this:

Can someone please decipher these codes?

In looking at the chart here it looks like Elenin has already passed the earth in the last few days- cause for fireballs, maybe?

We were always told that it would be the debris in the tail that would get us.

Is tomorrow a big chunk of the tail?

What was that site we all kept viewing the flight of the downed NASA satellite? Anyone remember? The one that kept showing it orbiting even as NASA said it had already landed.

And if anyone can explain a couple of things on this site I would sincerely appreciate it.

I've highlighted the ones I'm curious about in red and asked the questions below.

Thank you, Miggy

I'll take that as a left handed compliment. Thanks. I enjoy being here, it often provides me an opportunity to improve my analytical skills in ways I normally wouldn't. It's actually made me better at astronomy.
I'll say that if I had what you do, and maybe one day I will when I can get my priorties straight, I would be going to school for astronomy and leave internet fame behind me.
 Quoting: AC

I've taken some college classes on astronomy. I'm not interested in pursuing it as a career at the present time though. I do it strictly because I enjoy doing it, and that means I can decide for myself what I want to observe and when. I can focus on whatever I want to focus on, whether it's satellite observing, planetary, solar, deep space, whatever. Debunking things here occasionally inspires me to try something new as well, and I really enjoy applying my equipment in new ways.
At first, you did come off as a bullshitter but you proved me wrong.

Is tomorrow a big chunk of the tail?
 Quoting: Miggy

If you're asking if 2011 S05 is a part of Elenin's tail... no, it's not. The orbit is completely different from Elenin. Even if a fragment somehow managed to come all this way it would still have certain characteristics of its orbit that matched elenin. 2011 SO5's longitude of ascending node is almost 50 degrees different, the argument of perihelion is almost 100 degrees different, the eccentricity is about half of elenin's, the perihelion distance is almost twice elenin's, etc. Aside from both having relatively low inclinations, they share little in common, and the former is shared by many NEOs.

What was that site we all kept viewing the flight of the downed NASA satellite? Anyone remember? The one that kept showing it orbiting even as NASA said it had already landed.
 Quoting: miggy

Again, "realtime tracking" sites only show the currently predicted position based on the orbital elements. They don't account for the effects of the atmosphere, so those elements are occasionally updated and the output from the site won't show when a satellite de-orbits. "Realtime tracking" really just means "realtime solution from the elements." Those solutions are not terribly accurate for satellites about to re-enter and won't show re-entry occur.
1. Does the first/last object used seem odd? We didn't use it until 9/18/2011 and it's already coming back down?!
 Quoting: miggy

Huh? No, that's not odd. That just means it was recently discovered and there are very few observations made of it for orbital determination.
2. What does solution date mean? It occurred 1 day after the last obs was used. Is THAT when they knew it was coming down?
 Quoting: miggy

Again, it's not "coming down." The solution date is the date the orbit was last computed using the astrometric data submitted to the minor planet center.
WHY THE HELL DIDN"T ANY OF US EVEN KNOW THIS THING WAS LAUNCHED IN THE FIRST PLACE TO BE USED LESS THAN A WEEK?!
 Quoting: miggy

It wasn't "launched." It's an asteroid.
4. WHO the HELL is this "producer" Otto Matic? I'm googling that one right now.
 Quoting: miggy

That just means the orbit was automatically computed. Lots of asteroids and comets on JPL carry that designation for the same reason. It's a nerd joke.

Maybe from these prophets?

For the stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not give their light;

The sun will be darkened in its going forth,

And the moon will not cause its light to shine.

~ Isaiah 13:10 (NKJV)

When I put out your light,
I will cover the heavens, and make its stars dark;

I will cover the sun with a cloud,
And the moon shall not give her light.

~ Ezekiel 32:7 (NKJV)

The earth quakes before them,
The heavens tremble;

The sun and moon grow dark,
And the stars diminish their brightness …

The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.

~ Joel 2:10,31 (NKJV)

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” ~ Matthew 24:29 (NKJV)

I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood. ~ Revelation 6:12 (NLT)

Note that the darkening of the sun & moon in Joel 2:10 and Revelation 6:12 occur in conjunction with a great earthquake; Isaiah 13:10 and Ezekiel 32:7 also state the stars & heavens will go dark. Along with this darkening, in Matthew 24:29 Jesus says “stars will fall from heaven,” which could indicate an intense meteor shower: dozens of ‘shooting stars’ falling every minute, thousands each hour.
Be Still and know that I am God.

The orbit condition code is a number which was designed by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) to give a rough scale for how well determined a main-belt asteroid orbit was. 0 implies the orbit is about as well determined as possible (i.e., it has been observed for many oppositions over many decades) and 9 implies the orbit is very uncertain (typical for newly discovered asteroids with only a few observations over a day or two). The MPC has a web-page describing this parameter:

U are WRONG , no doom. condition code 8 means the orbit data is uncertain

MPC "U" parameter: orbit uncertainty estimate 0-9, with 0 being good, and 9 being highly uncertain

it is NOT 8 on the Torino scale

Learn to read man..

What , that it is an uncertain orbit 9 being worst and you think this 8 is good?

I looked at the JPL orbit and it makes me wonder if we have that asteriod that is always out in front of Earth's orbit what happens from Sept 30 through October 3 when (2011 SO5) gets in that asteriods path?

I've played lots of pool before but since (2011 SO5) is in a spin...no telling if they hit each other what could happen and we'd just be coming up behind the wreckage path.

Could be interesting, No?

Possible doom on?

That was the Trojan asteroid that I spoke of, but the people on this thread are so over Elenin they don't even want to think about or discuss space objects. It's okay it is a human condition.

Please can someone answer why this satellite was only used 5 days before falling back down and appears to be launched by Opto-Matic?

So can I just go out in my backyard and launch something and to hell with what happens to it?

All of these deceptions of NASA are "produced" by "Otto Matic".

Do you know who "Otto Matic" is?

Its a VIDEO game.

Read that - Notice "otto Matic and Planet X references?

Well ... guess what? The game was developed in 1987 and released SEPTEMBER 10TH 2001

"Otto Matic" is a NASA/Illuminate tool of deception.

Dont be deceived.

Hell yeah I'd get the word out if something like that were about to happen!
 Quoting: Astromut

Why, you couldn't save anyone. All you would do is scare the shit out of everyone and make hell on Earth, which is exactly what no one wants. Maybe if it was localized damage I would but if it were the one to affect the whole world, well I would kiss my wife and kids and cherish what little time I had left.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1504077

He would warn us because he would want us to enjoy the time we had left.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Astro is a human being like the rest of us - only smarter.
 Quoting: Khim

He is smarter, cause he is doin well in Astronomy? Interesting.
What about people who can repair cars, or can fly airplanes? Are they stupid?

putin
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2204280

Maybe just smarter in the field of astronomy where others like myself are completely dumb. Yup I admit, I don't know the first thing about it apart from naming the planets in our solarsystem in the right order.
But I'm sure this person doesn'tknow how to bake one brilliant wellington. *shrug*
So I'm quite happy with the info he gives even tho I'm sure part of it is still lost on me, if this person ever needs a good recepy ... he can come talk to me ;p
