El Niño and La Niña weather patterns will become even more dominant in New Zealand with climate change, according to research from The University of Auckland published in Nature Climate Change.

"As the world continues to warm New Zealand is likely to experience the impacts of El Niño and La Niño events with comparable intensity and frequency to what we have seen over the last three decades, and possibly more so," says lead researcher Dr Anthony Fowler from the School of Environmental Science. "This means that we should anticipate more extreme events, such as flooding and droughts, in the regions affected by these weather patterns."

In New Zealand, El Niño events usually bring more cool south-westerly winds. The whole country tends to be relatively cool with associated droughts in sheltered eastern areas of both islands. The winds reverse with La Niñas. Moisture laden air from the sub tropics elevates temperatures, especially in the North Island, and brings higher rainfall to much of the country, sometimes with associated floods.

February 5, 2012 – PHILIPPINES – The Philippines, like Japan, sits in one of the most volatile tectonic areas on Earth but unlike Japan, the Philippines is under geological assault from plate movements on all sides. The Philippine plate is squeezed in between the Eurasian plate and the Pacific Plate, but the situation is more complex than that. The Philippine Islands are surrounded by complex plate boundaries, and the Philippines Plate rather consists of several micro-plates – squeezed in between two convergent plate margins. The lines with black triangles are active subduction zones with teeth on the over-riding plate. Lines with white triangles are passive subduction zones with teeth on the over-riding plate. The major Philippine fault zone is shown as a black line with arrows showing the movement direction. The volcanoes Pinatubo and Mayon are shown as red dots. The volcanoes of the Philippines are probably the most deadly in world. Both Pinatubo and Mayon are both capable of producing VEI6 type eruptions. Because the moon’s tidal influence is so great in the Pacific, volcanologists warned in 2006 that Mount Mayon could explode at any time and that the gravitational pull of a full moon could provide the final push. A full moon coincided with at least three of Mayon’s nearly 50 explosions over the last four centuries, including the two most recent in 2000 and 2001. The volcanoes are concentrated in a northern volcanic arc above and east of the north-western subduction zone (Manila Trench) and in a southern volcanic arc above and west of the south-eastern subduction zone (Philippine trench). February 5, 2012 – MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) denied under water volcanoes caused the series of earthquakes in the Eastern Visayas starting Saturday night. This, as Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. pacified fears that volcanoes there would erupt anytime soon. Text messages started spreading last night that an underwater volcano is on the verge of erupting. This will supposedly cause a large tsunami. I'm seeing some funky signals on the helicorders along the N.E. US today. They seem to be on the Lamont, Weston, and Maryland networks. They look like small pulses but not micro quakes in appearance. Haven't any idea what it is but does look nearly ubiquitous among the stations.

February 5, 2012 – VANUATU - A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the isle of Isangel near Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. The earthquake was one of the deepest in the most recent swarms to strike this region of the Ring of Fire. The earthquake had a depth of 163 km (101 miles) below the ocean floor and no tsunami warnings were issued for the region. –The Extinction Protocol

February 5, 2012 – VANCOUVER, BC – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the waters off Vancouver Island Saturday afternoon. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 12:05 p.m. local time about 170 kilometers west from Ucluelet, B.C. It was recorded at a depth of 12.8 kilometres in the Pacific Ocean. Natural Resources Canada assigned the quake a magnitude of 5.6, differing slightly from the USGS assessment, and said “no tsunami (is) expected from an event of this magnitude.” Some Ucluelet residents told local media they felt a small tremor. According to the USGS, a handful of residents in Nana, Courtenay and Campbell River reported feeling “weak” tremors. No damage has been reported. –CTV

Philippines: After recent earthquakes in Vanuatu and New Zealand a new earthquake has struck today, this time off the coast of the Philippines. It was originally categorized as a magnitude 6.0 but has been downgraded to a magnitude 5.6. No tsunami warning has been issued. The moderate earthquake struck at 9:09 pm local time on Saturday, that’s 13:09 UTC according to the U.S. Geological Survey. February 4, 2012 – ANTARTICA – Antarctica is so vast that the pictures give you no sense of scale. The pencil-thin line across the satellite image of Pine Island Glacier (above) is actually more than 18 miles long, 800 feet across in places, and 180 feet deep. And it’s growing. In the next few months, scientists expect the glacier to create an iceberg about 350 square miles in area. It will probably float northward, melting as it goes. “Pine Island Glacier is losing ice very quickly, about six meters per year,” said Michael Studinger of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, which sent an expedition called Operation IceBridge to Antarctica in October in an old DC-8 jetliner, modified for scientific operations. February 4, 2012 – ENGLAND – A man in Dorset has been left mystified after tiny blue spheres fell from the sky into his garden. Steve Hornsby from Bournemouth said the 3cm diameter balls came raining down late on Thursday afternoon during a hail storm on January 26, 2012. He found about a dozen of the balls in his garden. He said: “[They're] difficult to pick up, I had to get a spoon and flick them into a jam jar.” The Met Office said the jelly-like substance was “not meteorological.” Mr. Hornsby, a former aircraft engineer, said: “The sky went a really dark yellow color. As I walked outside to go to the garage, there was an instant hail storm for a few seconds and I thought, what’s that in the grass?” Mr. Hornsby said he was keeping the balls in his fridge while he tried to find out what they were. Hawaii drought worsens: Federal authorities today issued a natural disaster designation for Hawai’i County due to ongoing drought conditions. The designation clears the way for affected ranchers and farmers to apply for federal relief. According to the National Weather Service, Extreme Drought conditions persists in the South Kohala and portions of the Hamakua District of Hawaii Island. Hydrologist Kevin Kodama noted in a recent advisory that pastures and general vegetation over most of the district were in very poor condition causing an ongoing concern for brush fires. The advisory further stated that ranchers in the area destocked cattle and initiated water hauling operations, while some Kona coffee growers, had to irrigate more than normal to sustain their orchards. MARSABIT, Kenya – Nomadic communities living off the dry terrain of northern Kenya have relied for generations on the powers of village elders to predict the weather. But the divinations of traditional forecasters were confounded by an unexpectedly severe drought in 2011, threatening herders’ livelihoods. Now pastoralists and meteorological experts are trying to find better ways to cope with regional weather that is increasingly difficult to anticipate – a situation some believe is linked to climate change. Using their traditional forecasting systems, the elders in Marsabit district predicted that rains would fail in the area from October or November 2010 until April 2011, but that after this dry spell the situation would return to normal. This information was relayed to the community through the network of traditional elders in every village in the district. As anticipated, there were only erratic rains towards the end of 2010, and then a dry period.
