Heavy winds battering the North Island have brought down trees and caused havoc on the roads as forecasters warn of more bad weather to come. The storm that hammered Northland yesterday spread further south overnight, with heavy rain lashing the top of the North Island and winds gusting to 120km/h in the central and lower North Island. The Fire Service said trees had fallen in Taranaki and the central North Island, while Gisborne police said there had been some surface flooding and felled trees south of the city. Trees have blocked State Highway 5 between Taupo and Napier, and have also fallen on SH47 near Turangi and SH1 between Taupo and Turangi. New Plymouth police this morning urged motorists to drive cautiously on State Highway 45 and surrounding roads as trees and debris like roofing iron had been blown onto roads. A truck was tipped over by wind earlier this morning and a utility and horse float was blown over in Oakura. Police said nobody was injured.

They have urged people to travel through the area south of New Plymouth only if absolutely necessary, and to do so with "extreme caution". Large parts of Taupo were without power until about 8am, while a large number of trees had come down and roofing iron had blown off a house. Constable Scott McLeod said motorists needed to be careful on the road, with "debris flying around the place". Damage from high winds is understood to have kept fire crews are busy in Turangi, Mangakino and National Park. In the Bay of Plenty, strong to gale-force winds forced the closure of Papamoa Hills Regional Park, with the regional council warning gusts could make the upper walking trail and bushland areas hazardous. MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, and Wairarapa, as the slow moving low continues to move across the country. The agency warned the ranges and eastern coastal hills of Hawkes Bay could receive a further 150 to 200mm in the 21 hours from 9am, while another 140 to 180mm is possible in the Ruahine Ranges over the same period.

Thousands of school students were sent home throughout Northland yesterday. School buses were rescheduled and parents were asked to pick up their children early, if possible. Mail deliveries were disrupted and more than 1700 Whangarei homes lost power because of flooding. Flood-damaged rail tracks near Hukerenui and Maromaku caused KiwiRail to cancel its southbound daily log train from Otiria. Northland Civil Defence spokesman Graeme MacDonald this morning said councils did not have to activate welfare centres overnight and its emergency operation centre would wind down today, with skeleton crews on board to monitor the situation. High tide passed on the east coast shortly before 7am today and did not appear to cause any unforseen issues. Despite the rain easing, Mr MacDonald urged Northlanders to keep an eye on local rivers and streams, which could take up to two days to recede below flood levels. Northland Regional Council hydrologist Dale Hansen said while many of the region's smaller rivers were now receding, larger rivers including Northern Wairoa and Kaihu would continue to remain very high for another day or two. More bad weather is set to lash the North Island tomorrow, as the sub-tropical low stalled over Northland is forecast to create a secondary low north of the country that will rapidly cross the upper North Island, bringing torrential rain and possible gales.

In my dream it was quite clear. It's what I call a flash dream. A message pops into my head and then I wake up.

In the "dream" I heard...New Zealand..8.6 earthquake. My first reaction was to run for my computer and check for tsunami's. I was in a panic....Then I woke up.

I was disturbed by the dream all day.

I do not know anyone in New Zealand but have quite a few friends in Australia.

Today I thought...maybe the dream was about Mexico but It was very clear...New Zealand.

I have had premonition dreams before. I once had a dream about a man who I had never met. In my dream the man had a horrible accident on a horse. The horse circled 3 times, reared up and fell backwards on the man crushing him.

Six months later, I met the man in my dream who was a jockey. His career was ended by a horse accident. And yes, the horse circled 3 times before it reared up and fell on him.

When I get these crazy dreams I take them seriously. Not all of them come true...Thank God...But I felt this was worth mentioning.

It is prophecies that a huge tsunami will wipe out Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. This would happen if their was a large quake on the fault just south of nz.

NZ police seize marijuana vending machine

New Zealand police say they have seized a marijuana vending machine during a raid on a "cannabis club" in Auckland which campaigns for the drug's legalisation.

The vending machine at The Daktory in suburban New Lynn had been set up to dispense one-gram bags of marijuana for $NZ20 ($15.59) each, according to one of the campaigners behind the scheme.

Police said they arrested four people and seized the vending machine, $NZ27,000 in cash and around 700 grams of cannabis, as well as bongs, pipes and other utensils when they raided the property on Thursday evening.

The innovative marijuana distribution method has received light-hearted media coverage in New Zealand in recent days but detective inspector Bruce Scott said The Daktory was breaking drug laws.

"Wherever there is drug offending of any kind, police will act swiftly," he said.

"We certainly do not take a softly-softly approach."

Cannabis is illegal in New Zealand, although studies show it is the third-most popular drug in the country, after alcohol and tobacco.
