My son has had the feelings he always gets when there are big quakes around here, all day long and still when he went to bed.

I better look at our seismo's

Inquiry hears scale of quake risk buildings

Thousands of earthquake vulnerable buildings should bedemolished to prevent further deaths, the Royal Commission into the Canterbury Earthquakes has been told. The quakes in September and February damaged almost all of the600 unreinforced masonry buildings in Christchurch, and similar properties in Wellington and Auckland could face the same fate inthe event of an earthquake. A report by Jason Ingham from the Department of CivilEngineering at Auckland University said there are 3800 at riskbuildings around the country and it would cost more than $2 billion to reinforce them.

"In many cases the cost of strengthening an unreinforcedbuilding may exceed it's current value," he said. "This becomes anextremely difficult exercise is terms of financing." Ingham said the most pragmatic approach would be to demolish allof these buildings which include sites in Cuba Mall in Wellington and the Britomart precinct on Auckland's waterfront. "The only issue here is what it would do to the fabric of ourtowns and cities," he said. "Many unreinforced masonry buildings are treasured as valuedrecords of our history."
