Stern of cargo ship Rena sinks off New Zealand coast

.The stern of a cargo ship off the coast of New Zealand which has been stranded for six months finally sank Tuesday.

Battered repeatedly by powerful 40-foot waves, the rear section of the Greek-owned Rena broke off three months ago near Tauranga.

“The Bay of Plenty and Coromandel communities are advised that the sinking of the stern section will likely result in the loss of more debris and small amounts of oil into the sea, which may then come ashore," Maritime New Zealand said.

About 11 containers, along with debris and oil, have reportedly washed up on shore.

The ruptured vessel has spilled hundreds of cargo containers, as well as tons of fuel and oil, into the Bay of Plenty since a storm in October left it stranded, authorities said.

The containers held timber, wool, bales of recycled plastic and bags of milk powder.

Community builds new home for fire-devastated family

The family that lost 11 members during Australia's worst house fire will today be presented with the keys to their new home at Logan, south of Brisbane.

Three women and eight children died last August when an early-morning blaze tore through the Taufa family's home at at Slacks Creek.

After losing so much the family has been given the gift of a new home, built on the same site.

Unions, construction companies, the local and state governments helped cover the cost for the property to be rebuilt.

Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) secretary David Hanna says the massive project began in January and is now complete.

"To be able to pull this off, to pull this together at short notice and in a short time and have it completed for Easter, it's a good feeling going into the break," he said.

"It's also giving something for the family to look forward to as well - the excitement of moving into a new home."

Mr Hanna says everyone involved donated the materials and their time.

"It's just an absolute sensational effort from the construction industry as a whole," he said.

He says that is not the end of their efforts.

"We're not going away, we're still going to be there at any time that they need help," he said.

Vast ice shelf in Antarctic has shrunk by 85pc since 1995

A VAST ice shelf in the Antarctic peninsula, a hotspot for global warming, has shrunk by 85 per cent in 17 years, the European Space Agency (ESA) says.
Images taken by its Envisat satellite show that the so-called Larsen B ice shelf decreased from 11,512 square kilometres in 1995 to only 1670 sq km today.
Larsen B is one of three ice shelves that run from north to south along the eastern side of the peninsula, the tongue of land that projects towards South America.
From 1995 to 2002, Larsen B experienced several calving events in which parts of the shelf broke away. It had a major break-up in 2002 when half of the remainder disintegrated.
Larsen A broke up in January 1995.
"Larsen C so far has been stable in area, but satellite observations have shown thinning and an increasing duration of melt events in summer," the agency said.
Ice shelves are thick floating mats of ice, attached to the shore, that are created by the runoff into the sea from glaciers.
Scientists say they are extremely sensitive to changes in atmospheric temperature and can be hollowed out from below by warmer ocean currents.
The northern Antarctic peninsula has been subject to atmospheric warming about 2.5C over the past 50 years, a figure that is several times greater than the global average.
Ice shelves are not the same as ice sheets, the vast blankets of frozen water that cover Antarctica.
If these melted, even partially, they would drive up sea levels, threatening small island states and coastal cities.
But the scientific evidence is that the ice sheets so far are stable.
"These observations are very relevant for measuring the future behaviour of the much larger ice masses of West Antarctica if warming spreads further south," ESA quoted Helmut Rott, a professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, as saying.

Russian space officials say a defunct 1.6-ton military satellite is expected to fall into the Pacific Ocean early Saturday. The Molniya-1-89 satellite, currently orbiting 1,500 miles above the earth, is being monitored by the Space Defense Force, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said. "Fragments of the Molniya satellite that do not burn up in the upper atmosphere may reach the earth's surface on Saturday, April 7," he said. The satellite is expected to fall in the Pacific between New Zealand and Antarctica. The Molniya-1-89 military communication satellite was launched in August 1996 from the Plesetsk space center in northern Russia.

Giant New Zealander 'Tiny' Tewao deported

A GIANT New Zealander whose size has been deemed a threat to Australia's national interest is back home after being deported.
Hayden Harlem Tewao, 26, who weighs 200kg, is 2.1m tall and is known to his friends as Tiny, arrived in Auckland on Friday night.
He was flown direct from Perth escorted by five Australian immigration officers, New Zealand's Herald today reported.
Mr Tewao moved to Perth from Auckland in 2007.
He was sentenced to three years and three months in jail in 2010 after committing a drunk and drug-fuelled aggravated robbery which left the victim with horrendous facial injuries.
His Australian visa was cancelled but Australia's Administrative Appeals Tribunal overturned the decision, describing him as a gentle giant at low risk to the community.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen then used his ministerial powers to overrule the tribunal, saying Mr Tewao was "an exceptionally large man whose role was to be the 'enforcer' in the offence" and who represented an unacceptable risk of harm to the Australian community.
Mr Tewao says he will move to Christchurch to avoid becoming involved in gang activity. He is considering appealing the minister's decision.
He felt "pretty overwhelmed" after leaving his mother, sister and niece in Australia.
"I had to leave everyone behind," he told the paper.
He was a changed man, who wanted to become a social worker and "help kids that have been through the shit that I was brought up around", Mr Tewao said.
He felt his deportation was harsh and said the public had nothing to fear.

Quake shakes NZ's southern region

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake has shaken the southern region of New Zealand's South Island.
The tremor may have been felt in Queenstown, GNS Science reports.
The quake at 6.48pm (4.48pm AEST) was centred 50km northwest of Te Anau, with a focal depth of 120km, GNS Science said.
"Possibly felt in Queenstown," the centre noted.

Sea Shepherd calls for immediate protection of New Zealand’s critically endangeres Maui’s and Hector’s Dolphins

The Maui’s Dolphin and Hector’s Dolphin are listed as critically endangered. The Maui’s Dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori maui) are a subspecies of the Hector’s Dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori) and both are endemic to New Zealand. Recent research has identified the population of Maui’s Dolphins to be within the range of 55 to 79, with the next category for these dolphins being extinction. The Threat Management Plan, published by the Ministry of Fisheries and Department of Conservation, after several years of consultation with the fishing industry and other interested parties, has conclusively identified the use of nylon filament gill nets introduced in the 1970’s as the number one killer of Maui’s and Hector’s Dolphin. Scientific research conducted over three decades by Dr. Liz Slooten and Dr. Steve Dawson of Otago University shows that there are not enough protected areas in New Zealand coastal waters to halt their rapid decline. In the last forty years, Maui’s Dolphin populations have plummeted from 1000 to the current estimate of 55. Hector’s Dolphin populations have dropped from 30,000 to 7,000 at current estimates.

Maui’s Dolphin will be the first marine cetacean in the world to become extinct directly due to human impact-unless you help! Please join a global initiative supported by Dr. Barbara Maas of NABU International to demand that the New Zealand government bans gill nets in the habitat of Maui’s and Hector’s Dolphin. The New Zealand government is currently accepting public submissions until April 11th. Support this ban by signing submission below and the petition to ban gill nets in the coastal waters of New Zealand.

There will still be more protection needed from other threats in the coastal habitat of Maui’s Dolphins (trawling, pollution, marine mining – we’ll work on these too), but most importantly let the New Zealand government know that you are not going to let the Maui’s Dolphin become extinct.

Thousands of Sydney homes and businesses have lost power as thunderstorms roll across the city. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Sydney, the Hunter region, the Mid North Coast, North West Slopes and Plains districts, forecasting damaging wind, hail and heavy rain. Emergency crews are trying to restore power to 6000 homes in Ryde, Lindfield, Killara, St Ives, Frenchs Forest and Turramurra, all serviced by Ausgrid. NSW State Emergency Services says it has received 53 calls for help so far during the storms, mostly for roof damage from heavy rain. A spokesperson said the Hills district had been worst hit. Opera Australia has also been forced to cancel Sunday night's production of La Traviata on Sydney Harbour, due to extreme weather.
