Help! How is neighbor listening to phone converstion!
Hello Everyone,
My mom has a neighbor that seems to know everything we talk about on the phone. We even set up a conversation where my mom said she was moving and the next couple of days, the neighbor told my mom she was glad she was moving!
We hear clicks on the phone while we are talking.
The phone company has been out multiple times to check wires and internal wiring.

Changed to different company, and the same. The phone company reported 86 hang ups in a 20 hour period.
My mother is older and not on the phone that much.
She has land lines and digital cordless phones.

Any help would be appreciated. She feels so violated. This has been going on for a few years now!
Thank you for any ideas or help!

Certain sets of headphones can pick up cordless phone conversations.

Or you have an open window.

Or your phones are tapped.

Or your lying.

Police Scanner Radio can be modified to pick up the frequencies used by cordless phones. All it takes is some soder and a sodering iron.

I don't know the real world odds of this happening, but I know it to be true. I have been a cable splicer/repairman for 39 years, and twice, I have seen this problem. Cordless phones are manufactured using a finite amount of available frequencies. They are shipped to retailers as a "mixed bag" so to speak, of frequencies to avoid just the problem you are describing. In view of the fact that this is a neighbor, I doubt that your line is "tapped". Buy your mom a new cordless phone and see if the problem is solved. If not, register a complaint with your state Public Service Commission.

I could hear my neighbors calls on a radio, it was a long time ago, about 13 years, and the early version of the cordless phone (perhaps 600Mhz)...I had an older radio and at the far end of the fm dial it would pick up her calls

The cordless phone is a transceiver.

The neighbor is intercepting the signal from it and spying on you.

I would stop using the cordless phones.

Thier phone is picking up the conversations most likely.
I was cleaning my phone one day and hit the speaker button on my phone(a cordless)and was surprize to hear my neighbor having a conversation with her daughter.
I offened wondered if they could pick up my conversations as well.
The old scanners can be programed to monitor a certain frec range for phone calls tooo.

Oh, they never heard me speak when I asked "what the hell"

The clicks are just typical switching going on with the phone company routers.

Modified police scanners can also pick up cellular frequencies as well.

I'm betting that there is a "cross" between ONE side of your mom's line with ONE side of your neighbors line. It takes a pair of copper wires for each households phone to work. When one of these 2 wires is crossed, i.e. shorted to one of your neighbors wires, it can, and will enable your neighbor to listen in on your mom's calls. Sounds complicated, but tell the phone company what you suspect, and ask them to test for foreign voltage or grounds(from your neighbors line) on your mom's line. This will solve your problem, but you have to get a repairman who is willing to test the lines thoroughly to find the "cross". Good luck with that.

The problem will NOT be at your Mom, or your neighbor's home. It will be in the main cable(either aerial or underground) that feeds the whole neighborhood.

Re: Help! How is neighbor listening to phone converstion!
It's easy. Scanner will allow someone to listen.
Even easier to get an old phone with some aligator clips substituted for the phone jack. All you need to do is go to the junction box and clip on to the various pairs of wires till you find the pair you want (by recognizing voices). Even easier to do today if someone clips on, gets a dial tone, and then calls there own phone to see what the caller ID shows.

When I was 10 years old (back in the 60's) we use to clip on the phone lines at the neighbourhood junction box and cut in on the neighbours calls. Lots of fun in the 1960's but I wouldn't recommend doing that now since it would probably get you some jail time.
