Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1094960 Do you mean NASA and amature astronomers? Astronomers from all over the world of all types, amateur and professional. How many 1000's of miles was NASA and amature astronomers off when they "predicted" the re-entry of their own satellite last week? Quoting: ACApples and oranges bud, predicting uncontrolled re-entries is extremely difficult. The best you can do is estimate a date until you get very close to re-entry. Predicting an exact location is not possible. There are too many changing variables, including spacecraft orientation (which if the satellite is offline will be essentially indeterminate) and atmospheric height and density profiles, which changes depending on solar activity. It's simply not possible to predict all those factors accurately enough ahead of time to nail down the re-entry location of an object traveling in excess of 7 km/second. Yeah numb nuts, even your God NASA is wrong now and then. Quoting: ACThey are not my God and you are ignorant for trying to compare uncontrolled re-entry prediction to asteroid tracking. The two are completely different. |

Insert asteroid/WW3 based on Tarot/Elenin/etc kind of crap. A lot of folks knew about this particular rock well ahead - it was discovered in 2005 lol. Yes, it's a relatively close call in terms of distance, but it's in no way a "possible impact" the way the OP puts it. |

[link to www.jpl.nasa.gov] "NASA Space Telescope Finds Fewer Asteroids Near Earth September 29, 2011 PASADENA, Calif. -- New observations by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, show there are significantly fewer near-Earth asteroids in the mid-size range than previously thought. The findings also indicate NASA has found more than 90 percent of the largest near-Earth asteroids, meeting a goal agreed to with Congress in 1998. Astronomers now estimate there are roughly 19,500 -- not 35,000 -- mid-size near-Earth asteroids. Scientists say this improved understanding of the population may indicate the hazard to Earth could be somewhat less than previously thought. However, the majority of these mid-size asteroids remain to be discovered. More research also is needed to determine if fewer mid-size objects (between 330 and 3,300-feet wide) also mean fewer potentially hazardous asteroids, those that come closest to Earth...." like i figured, it was going to be a letdown and intentional at that. analyzing the content, it is diametrically oppose to the growing expectation of an asteroid threat and even dispeling it to nothing with the wave of the word "fewer." also why a news conference when it's only about a month away from the YU55 flyby? and was YU55, the big rock it once labeled as potentially hazardous object, even mentioned at all? you can make me believe this news conference if a reporter or anyone popped the question about YU55 arriving on november 8 or 9 with a very much loaded "care to comment on that?" now with the fema broadcast for the fated november 9 and nasa's release of its own preparedness video, this is obviously meant to downplay an escalating issue hoping many will turn their attention somewhere else and take their minds off the asteroid scare.
