Are there any serious minded, scientifically educated vulcanologist(or related fields) on this site whom don't work for TPTB than can give an honest assessment of the situation and dangers to the east coast of the U.S.A at present. Quoting: WOMAN WHO RUNS W/ WOLVES If so would appreciate hearing your opinion. I am not a vulcanologist but my dad is a Sr. Geologist for the State of California, and a buddy is with USGS, and I slept very well last night. Opinion, El Hierro is plenty of entertainment for us and geologists, and most likely will create some amount of disaster for the Canaries, but the odds are against a mega tsunami. La Palma is the real threat, is on the course, but that might wait till 2012, or later. In the meantime, enjoy. Doom is not depressing. Only depression is depressing. |

RTVC just showed some of the dead fish from south of EL Hierro being brought ashore. Looked like a tuna type species. Definitely badly “burned. Whether by heat or chemical action I could not guess. Translation; "We have no experience in underwater volcanoes" For its part, the scientific National Geographic Institute (IGN), Carmen Lopez, said that since the signs of tremor appeared early Monday, the seismicity has disappeared. It has also stated that "the increase in tremor this morning, which has been felt by residents, suggests that there has been a second focus eruption," but the IGN does not know where it is located. "At the moment, which will shuffle into the sea, but if it continues like this could happen more dangerous landscape," he said. "If the migration (the focus) is closer to the coast, is another type of volcanism on land affected, probably between 500 and 1,000 meters," continued Carmen Lopez. "Volcanism in El Hierro is fissure type. That is, first magmatic material out and then becomes fragmented and making small cones along the ocean floor. By this we do not rule that comes close to the coast. " However, challenged by long would a possible eruption, Carmen Lopez said he did not know because they have no experience in underwater volcanoes. The El Roquillo tunnel will remain closed. The president of the Council of El Hierro has said that it is unknown how long the evacuation from La Restinga will last. 11/10/2011 18:49 – The president of the Government is currently meeting with experts and ministers in La Moncloa to discuss the El Hierro situation. 11/10/2011 18:10 – As a precaution, all maritime transport has been prohibited in the danger zone around the epicentre of the eruption off the south coast of El Hierro. 11/10/2011 18:02 – The military arrive at the sports venue where the residents of La Restinga have been evacuated to. The total population of La Restinga has now been evacuated. 11/10/2011 16:32 – The epicenter of recent seismic activity seems to be shifting toward the center of El Hierro. The National Geographic Institute expects higher intensity earthquakes, between 4 and 5 degrees, as the pressure of the lava underground searches for a point to escape.
