How can I become self sufficient if I cannot afford land?
We cannot have chickens in city-limits, we cannot have goats in city-limits. It's big enough for a garden but I would need much more room.

I could afford a loan for the bare land, but a bank wouldn't loan it to me, they would expect me to build a dwelling up to county code. It would be illegal to live on my own land if there wasn't the proper building.

Did you know, you cannot live on your own land if it's in a trailer? The only way you can live in a travel trailer is if you are building your own home, and even then there is a time limit of 1 year.

Tell me exactly how this is a free country? You can't even do anything unless it is all part of the system!

There is one city nearby that allows chickens in city-limits...by a $50 annual permit and limited to 3 chickens.

Going green and being sustainable? What a bull-shit scam!

Anyone can afford land. The only thing is where you end up. Could be at the top of a mountain, or the middle of the desert. But you can always find something you can afford.

It probably would be better to get a group together. If you still need a loan maybe some members would be more capable of getting one. If people in the group have jobs and decent credit, that might increase your chances.

Yes that is true, I can buy desert land with no ways to grow food and be many miles from civilization. Worthless land. Lots of that.

You cannot have multiple being living on the same property. Unless you apply for some sort of communal land, which is nearly impossible, completely unheard of. I haven't found any information online about communal land.

There are plenty of places that will let you put a trailer on your own land. Just have to check the codes and areas. In East Tennessee if you own the land, you can pretty much do want you want with it, as long as, you're not in a neighborhood or in the city. That's when the codes come into play. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess I was born in the wrong time because believe it or not I would have loved to grow up in the 1800's frontier times. Maybe I would regret wishing for that? Who knows.

Okay well I live in Oregon and there are very strict county laws. Someday we will find that perfect lot of land. I'd be very happy with just 1 build-able residential acre. However you can never find land for sale in small lots like that. It's either 10 acres for $250,000 or city limits for you.

Re: How can I become self sufficient if I cannot afford land?
In what state do you live? I can appreciate your frustration I know some cities and towns zoning regulations are very restrictive.
In a nearby city there is part of a park that is used for family gardens. The city allows residents to plant small gardens. The city/county will till the land in the spring in preparation for planting. I don't know how the city selects who can plant a garden but I do know the area that the land set aside is not fully used. You might wonder how the city/county is able to bear the cost. Thanks to a local judge he has those who get probation/community service time to prepare the garden plots for planting. Then whomever gets a plot does the rest. Perhaps your city council person or representative could get something like this started in your city.

If You really wanted a garden You would plant one even a small garden is better than none. People grow gardens on balcony's porches roofs driveways patios and even in the house.

You can't have chickens because why?? Oh ya the law says. Did You ever rip the tags off a pillow??? Have 2 beers and drive home? If not it's time to live dangerously build yourself a little chicken coup.Go get Yourself a few laying hens. And become an urban Outlaw like ME. Just do it! You are the only one holding You back.
