That is half of the current gold pricing. The other half is it's worth as a real worth mineral for industry. The properties of gold make it a worth more than other minerals plus there is not a lot of it. Remember in times past, a pound of Tulips was worth more than a pound of gold....also it's purty AND shiny. |

Why in this day and age is everything based on it??? oh, and then they turn it into blocks and store it.... wtf.... The inherent value of gold never changes. Only the value of the fiat currency with which you purchase a certain amount of gold (like 1 ounce) changes. The "price" of gold when expressed in terms of units of fiat currency appears to fluctuate . It is actually fluctuation in the value of the fiat currency you are using to purchase the gold that you are observing fluctuating, not the actual inherent value of the precious metal itself. |

withoutatrace User ID: 1476762 United States 09/30/2011 02:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Gold has great historical significance. Many societies, for thousands of years have used gold as their form of trade currency. Part of it is it's fairly limited supply, relatively speaking, as compared to elements such as copper. Another reason gold has been historically treasured is because of where it fits in the periodic table. The vertical group that includes "AU" (symbol for gold) also includes silver and copper. This group of elements make up the "coinage metals" which is their classification just as each other group of elements have their own classifications like noble gases, halogens, alkaline earth metals, etc. The "coinage metals" including gold, are somewhat soft and therefore easily pressed into coins or melted into bars in their non-alloy pure state. This is quite possibly the reason that gold and silver have been so popular for ages. Silver is in more supply than gold, this the supply and demand dictates the lower cash calue for silver than for gold. How about the price, it isn't that the value of gold is so high, as it is a reflection of how weak our dollar's purchasing power has fallen. Gold stays gold. But when it takes many more dollars to purchase the same quantity of gold, it means that the dollars are worth much less. Not many years ago, gold was in the $750 range for a troy ounce. Now that price is around $1600 and has been as high as around $1900 for a troy ounce. The high "price" of gold is a direct reflection of the value of the currency being traded for it. When we see the gold prices rise, it means our dollar has been devalued. The last week or so, we have seen a big drop in gold price. This drop is because there have been more regulations put in place regarding the trading of precious metals, mainly impacting people who have paper certificates of gold ownership over the physical gold in your hand. It is a temporary dip. As we see inflation continue to worsen, and the global economic markets being to collapse (and it will), then gold will continue to rise as paper currency falls in what you can buy for a dollar. Check your local grocery store and you'll see what I mean. People have been investing in gold to protect their investments and retirement accounts. A theoretical investor who has $10,000, could keep his $10,000 and watch it buy less and less, or he can invest it in the stock market and watch it fall in value sometimes 35%, or he can buy several ounces of gold and wait. With our economy on the cusp of great financial doom, investing in gold is the best way to have an asset that can be traded in for the new global currency that they will be pushing us toward after the Euro and Dollar collapse. The smart money is buying food, right now, before the prices continue to climb and millions of people end up starving in a terrible famine that will happen worldwide, including in the United States. That's gold, in a nutshell. I do not pretend to be an expert. But gold has always been, and always will be, a form of currency that will be universally traded for another currency in any other currency. Do not take this as investing advice. I am just attempting to help shed some light on why gold is what it is and why it costs so much. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 2353285 Australia 09/30/2011 02:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | the true value of it originates in sacred texts... it is still a well kept secret. People believed that gold surrounding the body prevented absorption out in space...the journey into other worlds.. the Eygptians were not the first to start 'ornate' burial methods... you can see it with the burial tombs of the Pharoahs etc. The belief/knowledge may have originated in UR Crete. |

The Real Answer User ID: 2127969 Australia 09/30/2011 03:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In the process of mining, they enslaved us, took advantage of us. They made us call them gods and they lorded over us like kings. Gold for them was something to kill for. We didn't know why, but we knew these rulers sure loved it. when they left, they left a power vacuum behind which was quickly filled by opportunists who took over the role of being 'gods'. In this position, they also mined gold - something that was seen as the rulers' due. Except, these new kings didn't really know what to do with it, so they made jewelry and adorned their crap with it. It has been considered valuable ever since. |

Quoting: AlaLuna BINGO....I see there is one person here who knows what White Gold is. ok, so what is white gold? and if something.. why is it stored being useless? ok, these numbers are totally made up but you can see how it works. In the US a nice good cow is $1800 so, in other words, cow=1 oz gold so, if you go to Europe it takes $1500 Euros to buy a cow, so $1500 Euros is 1 oz of gold ok...now you're the farmer...hay has gone up because you have to pay more in taxes and to the bank, and now, you have to sell the cow for $2000. Well, a cow in Europe still is the $1500 because they have no problem with hay or taxes..so in the US, gold is 2k but in Europe it's still 1.5k so we need more dollars to buy things, so the value of each dollar has dropped. So to buy that ounce of gold in the US, you are going to need 2k, while in Europe, they still only need 1.5k. Ok, you economic people....I don't think I got that totally right...I never had to take economics. Someone do a better example. As above, so below. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 2329577 Malaysia 09/30/2011 04:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The reason is very simple. That's because China and the rest of Asian cuntries have got a few trillion trashy paper dollar. Do you still want China to buy 1 oz of gold for 10 bucks ? More fake paper (Mainly By US) means the price of tangible/hard assets have to go up or else there would be severe shortage as a few Chinese or American billionaires would easily buy up all the gold/silver/copper and fack the world. |
