DOUBLE ERUPTION:

On October 1st around 10:17 UT, widely-spaced sunspots 1302 and 1305 erupted in quick succession, revealing a long-distance entanglement which was not obvious before. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) recorded the double blast:

The part of the eruption centered on sunspot 1305 hurled a coronal mass ejection toward Earth. The relatively slow-moving (500 km/s) cloud is expected to reach our planet on Oct. 4th, possibly causing geomagnetic storms when it arrives.

We did have an M flare right after impact:

One has to live in the present. Whatever is past is gone beyond recall; whatever is future remains beyond one’s reach, until it becomes present. Remembering the past and giving thought to the future are important, but only to the extent that they help one deal with the present.

Thought this thread should have remained pinned...
at least until we see all the data/images...

Nasa and soho obviously withholding images/data from us as they always do when something of importance is occuring.

They may need to doctor images in the name of national (corporate) security/interest.
Besides they wouldn't want to panic the masses if it was serious.....freeways must remain open so elite can make it to safety.tounge

Jesus H Christ owned. Seriously fucking owned. Owned

Did I mentioned....owned?

I don't even care if he comes up with a great response. That was a killer attack. Deserving of karma if you weren't an AC.
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

Actually, it looked more like a whinny attack post to me. His rebuttal was basically just insults, and you can't call the 'show use the proof!' one way or another an good attack. It's just a convenient way for people on this site to think they've owned someone. I would say there isn't sufficient evidence for either theory about the sun and interactions with celestial bodies.

Sol should really flag his post for abuse, because that's all it was. Notice how Sols post was a careful takedown. The response just being curse-spitting rants.

Well, I woke up and just wanted to check what had happened....

Wasn't that just awesome????

Wonderful event to watch unfold, and for once, no doom to accessorize! I showed my grandson and he was awestruck as well.

Thanks OP, great thread! Cheers!

NASA Science Chief stepped down 2 days ago... He was in charge of the heliophysics division. He had been with NASA for 32 years... now gone. They have no replacement for him so the deputy chief is filling in. Interesting timing, no?

I really wonder how a comet can create an explosion 1.4 million kilometer away.

Now there's a thought.

Re: This Sun Grazing Comet Is NOT a Small Comet...
This is ridiculous...solar physicists say they did not expect this reaction of the sun due to this comet when even I have personally observed major reactions from smaller comets...come on now.

snip:

The timing of the CME so soon after the comet dove into the sun suggests a link. But what? There is no known mechanism for comets to trigger solar explosions. Before 2011 most solar physicists would have discounted the events of Oct. 1st as pure coincidence--and pure coincidence is still the most likely explanation. Earlier this year, however, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) watched another sungrazer disintegrate in the sun's atmosphere. On July 5, 2011, the unnamed comet appeared to interact with plasma and magnetic fields in its surroundings as it fell apart. Could a puny comet cause a magnetic instability that might propagate and blossom into a impressive CME? The question is not so crazy as it once seemed to be.

The end was punctuated by an unexpected explosion: [link to www.spaceweather.com]
