Re: Live video of the moon showing field rotation and the moon's exact position in the sky! 10-2-11 Summary on page 4!!
The pic of Saturn show with 90 degree tilt was credited to the GLP SCOPE !

Your first, " How about THIS" WAS an out of focus pic shows Saturn's rings tilted to about 45 degrees from horizontal, excluding the extra degrees it would normally be with rings tilted DOWN about 15 degrees.

ALWAYS a change to some 'other proof'; NEVER an answer to the claim made !
Your 'supposed' to be associated with the GLP scope, so HOW COULD YOU not know about THAT pic ????
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2220482

My first picture (it was over-exposed, deliberately so that it could astrometrically solved, not out of focus) shows the astrometric solution of an image that was taken in altitude-azimuth and was therefore subject to field rotation; you have to look at it in its solved orientation to see the true orientation of saturn in the image. Hence the second picture. I am aware of the GLP scope picture, which was taken before I polar aligned the telescope and with an unknown camera orientation, and without stars in the image it is impossible to determine the true orientation of the image. That is why only the one I presented is useful for the purpose of determining the rings true orientation.

@Astromut,

Field Rotation,Schmield Rotation Pfff! You know very well the Moon has been flipped by some unknown celestial body, how dare you! Just kidding =0)

I actually have a Celestron Scope with a wedge and I can count the nose hairs on the moon. I do however have some weird problems with the CCD, the quality doesn't look that great. It's the NexImage by Celestron... did I purchase a crappy CCD you think?

Through my various eye-pieces I can easily make out Saturns rings as well but the CCD produces much lower quality than what I view through the eye-piece.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I haven't tried the neximage myself, but I was of the belief that it was the celestron equivalent to the meade LPI. I use the LPI as a viewfinder scope camera/guider, but I had previously used it to take some pics of saturn, the moon, etc (some of the early pics in my photostream are LPI [link to www.flickr.com] ).

Have you tried it with a good barlow lens? Generally I find mine works best at f/20 for most planetary imaging situations. It's not a high end imager, but it should be possible to coax some decent pictures out of it.

Not in the cards for tonight unfortunately; the spot I set up in for the evening has very poor visibility to the east. We'll definitely do some higher magnification lunar observation though.

Woah, I think I just saw a satellite transit the moon. Might have been a bird though, I'll have to look at the recording later. Marking the timepoint with this post.

No I have not, I do have several barlow lens up to 3x... if I get some clear skies tonight I'll give it a go. I can probably catch Jupiter about 9PM CST, it will be just above the horizon from my location.

Gotta run, dinner time.

Re: Live video of the moon showing field rotation and the moon's exact position in the sky! 10-2-11 Summary on page 4!!
Alright, I've got enough footage now showing the field rotation portion. At the start of the broadcast, with the edge of the moon up against the right edge of the view, the bottom tip of the moon was in about the center of the frame. Now with the edge of the moon against the right edge of the frame, the tip of the moon is at about the corner of the frame.

I'll switch to a high magnification view to allow you guys to take a closer look at the craters while I munch on some food, then I'll take down the broadcast for a bit and polar align the scope, then restart the broadcast and put it back on the moon.

Nice thread Nut! I recently got a LX 10. Mine is not a go to but the moon is easy enough to find. I will someday own a goto scope but am forcing myself to learn the old fashion ways first.

Back up and running. This is what the moon looks like from a polar aligned perspective. Now the angle of the moon's apparent tilt will not change over time.

cool...so what are we looking at this through?peace

off topic, but why the name change??
 Quoting: exiled1

We're looking at this through an 8" LX200 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope @ f/3 using a modified Samsung SDC-435 camera.

The name change was a joke poking fun at the way the "Nibiru Insider" mispronounced the word "astronomer." It grew on me and I decided to keep it.

 Quoting: Intruth

It's always good to learn how to star hop first. It's a very useful skill, it really teaches you how to recognize star patterns and read charts, which is always handy even when you do have a GOTO scope. The LX10 is a true classic. Later on you can re-use the OTA (optical tube assembly) and just buy a GOTO mount when you're ready.

That was definitely a bird or a bat just now. The moon is starting to get a little low, increasing the chance of animal flyovers. Before it sets, I'll shut off the tracking and note the time, then allow stars to streak through for astrometric position determination later. Then I'll re-engage the tracking and we'll go look at something else before wrapping it up for the night. Note the moon's orientation is still the same.

Funny, how you posted this tonite, I was looking at the moon with very high powered binoculars, this afternoon b/f sundown and actually saw the craters!!!

It was a beautiful sight!!!
