When that one girl died of hemorrhagic fever on May 6 2001, they just called it an unidentified hemorrhagic fever...however, a few weeks later, it was actually reported that the girl did indeed die of Ebolavirus. They even told us it was the Sudan strain. This case you showed us today may come back in a couple weeks to be an Ebolavirus (EBOV). It seems that whenever there is even a whisper of EBOV in an African city, they go on an all-out campaign to reduce collateral damage. On Friday, Dr Jack Vries of the Ministry of Health and Social Services said one patient probably died of liver failure while the other is suspected to have died of heart failure. The conclusive post-mortem results will be announced today, he said. On Thursday, he ruled out haemorrhagic fever as the cause of the deaths. Residents of the Hakahana area in Katutura last week claimed that a number of people were bleeding to death. Vries said rumours that a third person had also died last week were found to be untrue... Alisaria User ID: 1347080 United States 10/03/2011 06:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ebola? a level 4 morphing filo-virus? burns itself out? are you crazy? Why is it when people hear "virus" they think it morphs like nothing else. It's a non-segmented genome. It's had relatively few variations in it's known history. [link to virus.stanford.edu] Scroll to the bottom of this page, and you'll be able to see just how many variants there have been recorded from 1989 to 1996 (Bundibugyo strain from 2007). To date, I believe there has been only one strain added in the 15 years to present. Compare this to the bird flu phylogenetic tree ( [link to www.medscape.com] ). And this is only based on a few SEGMENTS of the RNA of this specific sub-species of the influenza virus. Yeah, ebola's pretty stable. The segmentation of a virus allows it to kinda "move around" its genome. It's why scientists can only guess what strains they should use in the influenza vaccines. It's also why I don't get the influenza vaccine: too many risks associated with an approximate prevention... |

Terrifying How fast the virus can mutate and spread. Quoting: feather I would love to see your source. The Hot Zone, while informative, is a work of dramatized fiction based on fact, including some actual facts. For example, not all victims of Ebola bleed out every orifice. However, the ones that do bleed are recorded to be more likely to die. Check this out: [link to www.cdc.gov] Every case of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever since it's discovery, up to the most recent confirmed Ebola-caused death of the little girl this May. The only "outbreaks" of Ebolavirus in humans occurred with the Reston strain, an Asian version of Ebola that doesn't even cause symptoms in humans and African primates. Exposures were due to contact with infected Green Monkeys, I believe. No "outbreaks" in the western world, only accidents in labs. And I hope you read my previous post about the wonderful stability of this horrible virus. It doesn't mutate very fast...it's remained fairly constant for the past 22 years. Similarly, the 41-year-old man who died in the Roman Catholic Hospital on 27 Sep 2011 had no contagious disease and died of heart failure. This was confirmed at a meeting at the Ministry of Health and Social Services head office in Windhoek yesterday [3 Oct 2011]. The ministry, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an investigation last week [week of 26 Sep 2011] after it was reported that people were allegedly dying of a mysterious bleeding disease in the Hakahana area of Katutura. Yesterday [3 Oct 2011], it was also revealed that only 2 patients died and not 4 as had been reported earlier. It was further established that the 2 deaths were unrelated. When the female patient was admitted to hospital, she complained of headache and a body rash. She was also found to be bleeding. After admission, her condition deteriorated and she later died. The 2nd patient collapsed on arrival at hospital and later died. According to his death certificate, he died because of heart failure. Dr Jack Vries of the health ministry said the probe showed that there is no public health concern. On Friday [30 Sep 2011] already, Vries had said the patients did not die of poisoning. This came after he ruled out haemorrhagic fever -- like Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, Ebola fever, or Rift Valley fever -- as the cause of the deaths on Thursday [29 Sep 2011].
