It seems to me that there has been a concerted effort to play down Ebola due to panic spreading, so, is this EBOLA?

There is also this, a virus found a few years ago that acts like Ebolavirus, and was found in the Southern end of Africa as well:

Well, there's the thing though. They don't seem to have many qualms with telling us when it actually is Ebola. When that one girl died of hemorrhagic fever on May 6 2001, they just called it an unidentified hemorrhagic fever...however, a few weeks later, it was actually reported that the girl did indeed die of Ebolavirus. They even told us it was the Sudan strain. This case you showed us today may come back in a couple weeks to be an Ebolavirus (EBOV). It seems that whenever there is even a whisper of EBOV in an African city, they go on an all-out campaign to reduce collateral damage. It's really sad but at the same time informational, but a missionary back in 2007 was in the city of Bundibugyo when an ebola oubreak occured. He has a blog about it from the beginning to the end. You should browse it and see for yourself how local infrastructure tries it's best with the locals to stave off the spread of the disease: [link to paradoxuganda.blogspot.com]

Ebola isn't the end all-be all hemorrhagic virus. There are plenty out there just as scary, like the Marburg virus. Yes, they are both filoviruses, but they are distinctly different from each other. Also, there are EBOV out there that don't cause any symptoms in humans, like the Reston strain, that tends to only kill Asian monkeys (doesn't even phase the African ones). All I'm saying is that I don't think it would do anyone any good to conceal it, especially when they're already disclosing how virulent and deadly it is. Ebola or not, people have been warned around there, and need to take necessary measures.

Sorry for the walls of text (I hope someone is reading them). Ebola has been a fascination with me ever since a teacher in middle school made us watch a documentary on Ebola and Marburg. It even helped me complete my BS in Biology (proposition for using the asymptomatic Ebola Reston to mount an Immune response against the more deadly strains).
It really is an interesting subject...

Congo Fever Not Cause of 'Mysterious' Deaths

Denver Kisting

30 September 2011

THE three Katutura residents who died in the past week did not suffer from a haemorrhagic fever such as the dreaded Ebola, Congo Fever or Rift Valley Fever.

Dr Jack Vries, the chairperson of the National Health Emergency Management Committee in the Ministry of Health and Social Services, yesterday confirmed that the deaths were being investigated...
Shakungwa apparently also complained of headache and a stiff neck. The families are now demanding answers from the authorities.

Answers about the cause of death in these cases are expected today. It is suspected that the deceased may have suffered some kind of poisoning

‘Mysterious deaths’ also not poisoning
By: DENVER KISTING

THE two Katutura residents who died last week – allegedly due to a mysterious bleeding disease – died not of poisoning.

On Friday, Dr Jack Vries of the Ministry of Health and Social Services said one patient probably died of liver failure while the other is suspected to have died of heart failure.
The conclusive post-mortem results will be announced today, he said.
On Thursday, he ruled out haemorrhagic fever as the cause of the deaths.

Residents of the Hakahana area in Katutura last week claimed that a number of people were bleeding to death.
Vries said rumours that a third person had also died last week were found to be untrue...
According to him, the one patient died in the Katutura State Hospital while the other one died in the Roman Catholic Hospital.

Why is it when people hear "virus" they think it morphs like nothing else. It's a non-segmented genome. It's had relatively few variations in it's known history. [link to virus.stanford.edu]
Scroll to the bottom of this page, and you'll be able to see just how many variants there have been recorded from 1989 to 1996 (Bundibugyo strain from 2007). To date, I believe there has been only one strain added in the 15 years to present. Compare this to the bird flu phylogenetic tree ( [link to www.medscape.com] ). And this is only based on a few SEGMENTS of the RNA of this specific sub-species of the influenza virus. Yeah, ebola's pretty stable. The segmentation of a virus allows it to kinda "move around" its genome. It's why scientists can only guess what strains they should use in the influenza vaccines. It's also why I don't get the influenza vaccine: too many risks associated with an approximate prevention...

I would love to see your source. The Hot Zone, while informative, is a work of dramatized fiction based on fact, including some actual facts. For example, not all victims of Ebola bleed out every orifice. However, the ones that do bleed are recorded to be more likely to die.

Check this out: [link to www.cdc.gov]

Every case of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever since it's discovery, up to the most recent confirmed Ebola-caused death of the little girl this May. The only "outbreaks" of Ebolavirus in humans occurred with the Reston strain, an Asian version of Ebola that doesn't even cause symptoms in humans and African primates. Exposures were due to contact with infected Green Monkeys, I believe. No "outbreaks" in the western world, only accidents in labs.

And I hope you read my previous post about the wonderful stability of this horrible virus. It doesn't mutate very fast...it's remained fairly constant for the past 22 years.

Please keep us posted. I really hope it isn't Ebola for the families' sakes. I was also reading that these individuals were shack dwellers... could this have something to do with malnutrition in conjunction with an infection if hemorrhagic fever is completely ruled out?

Ebola virus entry requires the cholesterol transporter Niemann–Pick C1
Received09 December 2010Accepted30 June 2011Published online24 August 2011

Infections by the Ebola and Marburg filoviruses cause a rapidly fatal haemorrhagic fever in humans for which no approved antivirals are available1. Filovirus entry is mediated by the viral spike glycoprotein (GP), which attaches viral particles to the cell surface, delivers them to endosomes and catalyses fusion between viral and endosomal membranes2. Additional host factors in the endosomal compartment are probably required for viral membrane fusion; however, despite considerable efforts, these critical host factors have defied molecular identification3, 4, 5. Here we describe a genome-wide haploid genetic screen in human ...

UNDIAGNOSED HEMORRHAGIC FEVER - NAMIBIA (03): (WINDHOEK) NOT

[1]
Date: Tue 4 Oct 2011
Source: The Namibian [edited]
< [link to www.namibian.com.na]

The 27-year-old woman who died in the Katutura State Hospital on 24
Sep 2011 had liver failure and not a communicable disease. Similarly,
the 41-year-old man who died in the Roman Catholic Hospital on 27 Sep
2011 had no contagious disease and died of heart failure.

This was confirmed at a meeting at the Ministry of Health and Social
Services head office in Windhoek yesterday [3 Oct 2011]. The ministry,
the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention launched an investigation last week [week of 26
Sep 2011] after it was reported that people were allegedly dying of a
mysterious bleeding disease in the Hakahana area of Katutura.

Yesterday [3 Oct 2011], it was also revealed that only 2 patients died
and not 4 as had been reported earlier. It was further established
that the 2 deaths were unrelated. When the female patient was admitted
to hospital, she complained of headache and a body rash. She was also
found to be bleeding. After admission, her condition deteriorated and
she later died.

The 2nd patient collapsed on arrival at hospital and later died.
According to his death certificate, he died because of heart failure.

Dr Jack Vries of the health ministry said the probe showed that there
is no public health concern. On Friday [30 Sep 2011] already, Vries
had said the patients did not die of poisoning. This came after he
ruled out haemorrhagic fever -- like Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever,
Ebola fever, or Rift Valley fever -- as the cause of the deaths on
Thursday [29 Sep 2011].
